19390815 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF / THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, . 1939, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. - - - - - - - - - - - - - The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, U. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider Councilmen absent: Leonis, Levy. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be di.spensed with. Motion carried. A communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, rec- ommendingthe acceptance of work on Boyle and Magnolia Street Improve- ment by C. M. Milovich, under P. W. A. Docket Calif. 2169-F, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and the recommendation of the City Engineer be concurred. in. Motion carried. Resolution No. 1000, a resolution of the City Council of the City of Vernon accepting storm drain improvements under docket No. "Calif. 2l69-F", Contract No.2, storm dr~in and street improve- ments, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Reso- lution No. 1000 be adopted. Motion carried. The report of Southern California Gas Company on Los Angeles County Fr~chise No. 467, for period ending June 30, 1939, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. \ A communication from Mulford Manufacturing Co., request- ing a permit for the manufacturing of gas burners and patterns at 5001 Pacific Blvd.,.was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Ralph Caraco, requesting a permit to operate a warehouse for thirty days at 4236 S. Produce Plaza, was read. . It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the communicat1on be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Norton TOlles, requesting that his box lunch license be transferred to John Boisserano, was read. -1- Jq~ It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Andrew W. Kray, 238 E. 8lst Street, Los Angeles, requesting a permit to operate a lunch wagon business in the packing house district, with letters of California Meat Co., Merchants Packing Co., and Great Western Packing Co. attached, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Glenn W. Hudson, 4102 Denker Street, Los Angeles, requesting a box lunch permit, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the COmnnln:J.cation be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from A-I Ice Cream Company, requesting that an ice cream vending license be granted to R. F. Davidson, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from United States Spring & Bumper Com- pany, requesting a curb repainted in connection with auto parking, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A report of C. A. Henize, Consulting Electrical Enginee~, on the operations of electric system by Southern California Edison Company, for the month of June, 1939, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. ' Resolution No. 996, a resolution of the City Council o:f the City of Vernon, approving the Budget requirements :for the year 1939-40, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that Reso- lution No. 996 be adopted. Motion carried. Ordinance No. 628, an Ordinance of the City Council of the City of Vernon, :fixing the Rate o:f Taxes and Levying the Taxes :for the Fiscal Year beginning July 1, 1939, was read :for the first reading. ' It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Ordi- nance No. 528 be p.ssed :for the first reading. Motion carried. A communication from C~li:fornia Art Products Inc., 2406 E. 58th Street, commending the :fire department on the effic- ient manner in.wbich a :fire was handled at their plant with a $C~~c~Oin.frthe.sum of $20.00 attached; also a check in the sum of · om Bradstreet Rubber Company, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed, and the checks forwarded to the Fire Department. Motion carried. t99 .. 2..:. Communications from the following firms requesting permits to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon, were read: Recordall Manufacturing Co., of 2619 Santa Fe Avenue; and Vernon Garage, of 1938 E. Vernon Avenue. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. The report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Building and PurChaSing, as of August 1, 1939, ~ read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the Minutes stand approved as read. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 6482: Southern California Water Company, to repair water main on E. 52nd Street, 1215 ft east of Alameda Street. Application 6483: Southern California Gas Co., to abandon gas service and install service and meter ,box at 2317 E. 38th St. Application 6484: Southern California Gas Co., to install 2" industrial gas service at 5001 Pacific Blvd. Application 6485: West & Cummings to construct 4 driveways and sidewalk for service station at 57th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6486:Cherman Furniture Co., to construct driveway and depressed curb at 5607 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6487: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove 1 pole on east side of BoUle Avenue, 300' north of Slauson Avenue. Application 6488: Southern California Water Cp., to repair main on east 25th Street, 752' east of Alameda Street. Application 6489: Southern California Water Co., to repair main at 2111 E. 51st Street. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the general fund in the sum of $15,118.04 were read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
