19390919 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR ~mETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 1939, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P.M. AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Levy Councilmen absent: Leonis, Scheider It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with. Motion carried. A communication from the City Engineer, regarding applica- tion to Federal Works Agency on traffic signals, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be laid over until the next regular meeting. Motion carried. A communication from the City Engineer, regarding termite control in the City Hall, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the com- munication be filed. Motion carried. A communication from the City Engineer, regarding appli- cation of Union Pacific Company for tracks across Boyle Avenue near Fruitland Road, was read. It was moved by Levy seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried. A communication from Lloyd Aldrich, City Engineer of the City of Los Angeles, regarding improvement of Washington Blvd., be- tween Soto Street and Downey Road, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the City Engineer of the City of Vernon for a re- port. Motion carried. A copy of a Resolution of the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, regarding payment of gasoline tax monies to cities, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. A communication from Francis H. Gentry, Mayor of Long Beach, regarding California League of Municipalities convention in 1940, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be Motion carried. filed. Motion carried. A communication from Meat Distributors Inc., requesting a permit to conduct a meat business at 3275 E. Vernon Avenue, was read. A communication from Clara Lawson, requesting a permit to operate a restaurant at 5712 S. Boyle Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Good Humor Ice Cream Company, request- ing the transfer of license from James Fletcher to James Willey for the selling of ice cream within the City, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communi- cation be filed, and the transfer effected. Motion carried. A communication from Joseph Mesmer regarding traffic con- ditions at 38th and Alameda Streets, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. A communication from Boyle Manufacturing Co., regarding park- ing conditions at 5100 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Howard Supply Co., regarding parking conditions at 5125 Santa Fe Avenue, WaS read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Vernon City School regarding parking conditions at Vernon and Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from State Relief Administration regarding traffic conditions at 52nd Street and, Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communi- cation be referred to the Police Dep~rtment. Motion carried. . A communication from General Petroleum Corp., regarding park- ing conditions on 37th Street between Soto Street and Union Pacific Tracks, was read. Communications from Bethlehem Steel Co., and Fibreboard Products Inc., requesting permits to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon, were read. , . It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communi- cations be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. A report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Electrical Engineer, on the operation of the electric system by Southern California Edison Company for the month of July, 1939, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that same be filed. Motion carried. ' The report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Purchas- ing and Building as of September 5, 1939, were read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that same stand approved as read. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 6529: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove one pole on Bandini Blvd., at 1485 feet west of Downey Road. Application 6530: Ace Foundry Co., to construct curb and driveway on north side of 26th Street, 15 feet east of Harriett Street. Application 6531: Southern California Telephone Co., to move pole 10 feet south to clear box drain on west side of Mag- nolia Avenue, 1050 feet north of Randolph Street. Application 6532: Southern California Water Company, to re- pair water main at 2027 E. 25th Street. Application 6533: Southern California Edison Company, tore- pair broken conduit on east side of Soto Street 100 feet north of Soto Street Bridge. ' It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the applica- tions be approved, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $10,881.89 were read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
