19391219 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINU$ OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON. CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1939, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Scheider Councilmen absent: Levy It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be ~uspended. Motion carried. At this t~e the Clerk opened and read bids received for doing the work on 57th Street waste water drain as per specifications No. 123. The following firms submitted bids: Edward Green, Leka & Bosnmak, Sutala & Ranljak, Bebek & ~rkickC. K. Construction Co., Artukovich Bros., G. E. Kerns, R. A. Wattson C6. and P & J. Artukovich. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the bids be referred to the City Engineer for checking and a report. Motion carried. A communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, regarding drainage from Graham Bros. property to City Dump on Soto Street, to- gether with his recommendation that their permit be cancelled, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the rec- ommendation of the City Engineer be concurred in. Motion carried. X report from General Petroleum Corp., on franchises Nos. 80, 152 and 299 for a ~eriod ending October 31, 1939, together with a cheek in the sum of $33.23, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the matter be laid over until a future meeting. Motion carried. A communication from Jacob Adelson, requesting a permit to conduct a business of manufacturing flooring at 4244 Produce Plaza was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from ~ouis Meyer, Inc., requesting permit to rebuild Ford automobile engines at 4561 E. 48th. Street, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Beralta that the com- munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Pioneer-Flintkote Company, expressing appreciation for the creation of loading zone in vicinity of their plant at 55th and Alameda Streets, was read. Communications from Wilshire Oil Company and Canada Dry Ginger Ale Co.# requesting permits to haul refuse from their prem- ises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon were read. It was moved by Scheider# seconded by Peralta that the communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. The Report of the Poiice Department was read. It was moved by Leonis# seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Francis Bates# City Engineer# sub- mittingmap of Regional Planning Commission's Master Plan of High- ways# was read. It was moved by Scheider# seconded by Peralta that same be filed. Motion carried. A report of Carl Heinze# Consulting Electrical Engineer, on the electric system for October, 1939# was read. It was moved by Leonis# seconded by Scheider that same be filed. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Purchasing, and Building as of December 5, 1939, were read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same stand approved as read. Motion carried. Resolution No. 100~, a Resolution of the City Council of the City of Vernon appointing Frank H. Donnelly Chief of the Fire Department of the City of Vernon was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that ~esolu- tion No. 100~ be adopted. Motion carried. The following applications# all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: A~plication 6663: Buttress & McClellan, to construct drive- ways and curbs at southwest corner of Pacific Blvd. and Chambers Streets. Application 6664: Southern California Telephone Co., to place one anchor in west side of alley, east of Pacific Blvd., 70 feet south of Fruitland Road. Application 6665: Southern California Telephone Co., to remove one pole on north side of Vernon Ave., 1610 feet east of Santa Fe Avenue. -2.. Application 6671: Howard McCurdy, to put mncrete over gas- oline pumps in service station at 49th. and Pacific Blvd. Application 6672: California Cotton Oil Co., to make sewer connection a~ 2301 E. 52nd Street. Applieation 6673: J. B. Leonis Inc., to make sewer connec- tion at 43~0 Magnolia Avenue. Application 6674: Swift & Company, to make sewer conneetion a t 3750 Jewel~Avenue. Application 6675: Southern California Edison Co., to set two poles and one sidewalk anchor on Magnolia Avenue, 520 feet north of Slauson Avenue. Application 6676: Southern California Edison Co., to set one pole and one anchor in Magnolia Avenue, 300 feet south of Slauson Avenue.. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the ap- plications be approved, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $13,325.47, were read.
