MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY, JANUARY 2,
1940, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE
CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, 4305
SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIF.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Scheider
Councilmen absent: Leonis, Levy.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the
reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be dispensed with.
Motion.carried.
. A communication from Factory Site Company, regarding
building set-back on Hampton Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that the
matter be referred to the City Engineer and City Attorney. Motion
carried.
A communication from Thompson Manufacturing Co., request-
ing permission to locate a meat distribution concern on property lo-
cated at 26th and Soto Street, was read. .
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Bert Rapp, requdsting a permit to
operate a gasoline service station at 26th and Soto Street, was fiead.

It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the
communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Mrs. Kathryn Eastlund, regarding
traffic conditions at 26th and Soto Streets, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Co~unications from the following firms, requesting per-
mission to haul refUse from their respective premises upon and along
the public streets of the City of Vernon were read:
Percival Steel & Supply Co., 4600 Santa Fe Avenue; Flossie
Shafer, 3701 Santa Fe Avenue; Acme Brewing Co., 2080 E. 49th Street;
General Petroleum Corp., 2525 E. 37th Street; and Western Washer &
Stamping Co., 2111 E. 51st. Street.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that the
communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The following Applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read:

Application 6693: Southern California Telephone Co., to
replace one pole on south side of 37th Street, 138' west of Santa Fe
Avenue.
: A~plication 6694: Santa Fe Railway Co., to renew ties and
tail across ~6th Street, approximately 40 feet east of Minerva Street.
Application 6695: Los Angeles By-Products Co., to con-
struct concrete curb and apron on north side of E. 26th Street, approx-
imately 1030 feet east of Alameda Street.

Application 6696: Buttress & McClellan, to pave seven feet
strip of eight inch A.C.. pavement on north side of 51st Street.-, approx-
imately 292 feet east of Alameda Street.
ApJ21ication 6697: Southern California Telephon$Co., to
replace two poles and remove one anchor on south side of 37th street,
620 feet and 916 feet east of Santa Fe Avenue.
Application 6698: Safeway Stores to make sewer connection
at southeast corner of Vernon and Alameda Streets.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that the
applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
The Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that same
be fileq. Motion carried.
A communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, advis-
ing that J. W. Forney has purchased 6056 board feet of the City's
lumber (surplus) at a price of $54.72, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the
said purchaae be approved, and the communication be filed. Motion
carried.
The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Pur-
chasing and Building, as of December 19, 1939, were read.
It was mov'd by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
Minutes stand approved as read. Motion carried. .
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $7,095.57,
were read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the
demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
