19400305 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes ~, " MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, CALIFORNIA, HELD TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1940, AT THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, -4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Scheider, Levy, Peralta. Councilmen absent: None It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be suspended. Motion carried. / At this time the City Clerk opened and read beds from the following firms for the doing of the work on the traffic con- trol signals in accordance with Specifications 124: Pacific Coast Elevator Co.; Newbery Electric Co; and R. A. Wattson Co. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Per~lta, that same be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. A communication from the County of Los Angeles Agricult- ural Commissioner, advising that $80.00 has been set aside for puncture weed control within the City, and a Resolution thereto at- tached, were read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider_that the communication be filed, and the resolution adopted. Motion carried. A communication from Parkersburg Rig & Reel Company, re- garding the locating of a paint and lacquer plant on E. Washington Blvd., in Rancho Laguna (referring to application of Trojan Lacquer Co.), was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that same be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried. A communication from Insurance Company of North America, regarding claim against Lyon Van & Storage Co., for damaging fire hydrant, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that same be referred to the City Attorney for a report. Motion carried. A communication from Los Angeles Railway Company, and re- port on Franchise No. 91 and No. 521, together with a check inthe sum of $152.35, were read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider) that the communication and report be filed, and check accepted. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that same be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried. A communication from J. R. Cuthbert, 109 S. Normandie, Los Angeles, requesting a permit to operate a commercial sand blast business at 2323 E. 27th Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.. A communication from Morris Rose, 3400 Somerset Dr., re- questing a permit to operate a parking lot on Lot 5, J. H._Taylor Vernon Avenue-Villa Lots, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that the com- munication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms, requesting per- mits to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of the Ci tyof Vernon, were read: . Los Angeles Board of Education, re Vernon City School; Scovill Manuf'4ctu.ring Co., of 2627 Santa Fe Avenue and. 2627 Soto Street; Safeway stores of 1939 E. Vernon Avenue; and Klassen Company, of 2335 E. 27th Street. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that the communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion car~ied. A communication from American Mineral Co., requesting a permit to erect a grinding plant in the 5600 plock on BoVle Ave. was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. Resolution 1013, a resolution of the City Council, es- tablishung a polli~ place and appointing election officers for the general Municipal election to be held April 9, 1940, was read. ." Motion carried. A co~unication from the Southern California Edison Co., regarding franchise tax, was read. Ry Co., to remove rail and repave crossing at 27th, 30th and 37th Streets on main line east of Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6790: Southern California Water Co., to re- pair 6" water main at 2160 E. 25th Street. Application 6791: Southern California Water Co., to re- pair 6" water main at 2000 E. 25th Street. Application 6792: Southern California Water Co., to re- pair 6" water main at 2117 E. 25th Street. -Application 6793: Quality Foundry Co., to construct drive- way at 2707 E. 26th Street. 1 Application 6794: Griffith Company, to make excavation in Soto Street and in E. Vernon Avenue for cattle underpass. Application 6795: General Petroleum Corp., to install 4" conduit for telephone across E. 37th Street. Application 6796: General Petroleum Corp., to make sewer connection on north side of 37th Street, 1713' east of Santa Fe. Avenue. Application 6797: Buttress & McClellan, to make sewer con- nection on 3852 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6798: Northwest Engineering Co., to construct driveway in 37th Street. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the appli- cations be filed, and permits granted. The Minutes of the Committee of Light, Power, ..ater, Pur- chasing and Building as of February 20, 1940, were read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider, that same stand approved as read. Motion carried. Demands Qn the General Fund in the sum of $5,908.36 were read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Leonis that the demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
