19400508 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING .OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1940, AT THE~ HOUR OF, THREE 0 'CLOCK P.M., AT, THE CITY HALL, 430.5 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. -- - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - In the absence of the Mayor, the City Clerk oalled the meeting to erder, and E. R. Peralta was elected Mayor Pro Temof the ma:tjng. Councilmen present: Leonis, Peralta, Scheider, Levy Councilmen absent: Furlong It'was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be suspended. Motion carried. A communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, stat- ing that Newbery Elect"ric Corporation has requested a twenty-day -' extension of time for completion of traffic signal installation, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis, that the communication be filed, and the extension of time .be granted. Motion carried. A communication and Opinion submitted by O'Melveny & Myers in connection with the City of Vernon Sewer District_No. One Bonds, was read. be filed. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis, that same Motion carried. A communication from John F. Bender, Attorney at Law, in regards to special..assessment districts, was ree..d. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider, that same be filed. Motion carried., A communication from Samuel C. Stoner, Attorney at Law, regarding the P. J. Durbin Estate, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis, that same be referred to the City Attorney, with the power to compromdse. Motion cafried. A communication from W. Ross Campbell Co., regarding the locating of a new and used scrap metal business at 2323 E. 27th St., (for.merly occupied by Finkelstein Supply Co) was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis, that the matter be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried. A communication from H. I. Takahashi, requesting a permit to operate a restaurant at 2613 Fruitland Road, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that same be referred to the Police Department with the power. to act. Motion carried. -l-- A communication from A-I Ice Cream Co., requesting a permit and license in the name of Arthur Dickson to sell ice cream within the City, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider, that the communication be filed, and permit and license be granted. MOtion carried. A communication from Paraffine Companies Inc., regarding parking conditions at 4500 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Swift & Company, regarding parking con- ditions at 2691 E. Vernon Avenue, and on Jewel Avenue, was read. It was ~oved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that the mat- ter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Victor Belting & Rubber Co., 2316 E. 38th Street, expressing appreciation on compliance with their re- quest in the matter of parking situation, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms and persons, request- ing permission to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon, were read: Union Oil Company, Slauson and Santa Fe Avenue; J. B. Leonis, Inc., from various properties; Union Die Casting Co., 23l3.E. 51st S$reet; Standard Packing Co., 2440 E.Vernon Avenue; Hess Construction Co., 2065 E. 51st Street; Chas. Harley Co., 2501 E. 26th Street; and Cherry-Burrell Corp., 4621 Pa~ific Blvd. . It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that the appli- cations be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. A communication from Westley H. DeSellem, on employment, was read. It was .movedby Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the matter be taken under advisement. Motion carried. A communication ,from Field Transportation Co., was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy, that same be referred to the City Clerk for checking. Motion. carried. Resolution No. 1018, a resolution of the City Council, fixing the salary of W. B. Hollingsworth, in the City Engineerls office, at $150.00 per month from May 1, 1940, until further or<<er of the Council, was read.
