MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, MXY 21, 1940, AT THE HOUR
OF THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL

The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J.
Furlong.
CounciLmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Levy,
Scheider.
CounciLmen absent: None
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta, that the read-
ing of the Minutes of the previous meeting be suspended. Motion
carried.
A communication from Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway
Co., regarding the raising of signal wires on E. 27th Street, was
read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis, that same
be referred to the Electrical Consulting Engineer. Motion carried.
A communication from the City of Huntington Park, re-
garding the locating of signals at Slauson and Boyle Avenue, was
read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy, that the mat-
ter be referred to the Police Department for a report. Motion
carried.
A report of the Southern California Telephone Company
on franchise ordinance No. 108, together with check in the sum of
$9,764.93, was read.
. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider, that the
report be filed, and check accepted. Motion carried.
A report from the Bure~u of Census, reporting prelim-
inary census count for the City of Vernon at 842, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Bruno Wollmann, 327 N. Sycamore,
Los Angeles, requesting a permit to conduct a business of. Dealer
in Metal Shearings at 2149 E. 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication ~rom Frank Mate, requesting permit to
operate a buss station at 2040 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried.

A oommunication from Upton S. Allder, 4444 E.
56th Street, Maywood, requesting a permit to conduct a sludge
drying business on property of Air Reduction Company, located
at 5600 Biokett Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Fire Chief. Motion carried.
A communication from Air Reduction Sales Co." re-
questing the approval of the application by Upton S. Allder, was
read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Fire Chief. Motion carried.
A communication from Geo. H. McKissen, 8465 San Luis
Avenue, South Gate, requesting a permit to sell milk within the
City, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion oarried.
A oommunicationfrom Frank F. Threadgold, request-
ing permit to sell dairy products within the City, was read.

A communication from K. H. Garo, 7811 Walnut Dr.,
Loe Angeles, requesting a permit to operate a lunch wagon at
Fruitland and State Streets, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Le'!Y, that same
be referred to the Police Department. Motion oarried.

Co., regarding parking conditions at 5075 Santa Fe Avenue was read.
It was moved by Leonie, seconded by Levy, that same

A oommunication from Swift & Company, regarding
parking oonditions at 2691 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, senronded by Levy, that same
be referred to the Police Department. Motion oarried.
A communioation from Cantlay & Tanzola Ino., re-
garding parking oonditions at 2835 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seoond~d by Peralta, that
same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms, requesting
permits to haul refuse upon and along the public streets of the
City of Vernon, were read:
Golden West Supply Co. 2448 E. 54th Street; Petrol-
eum Equipment Co., 2800 S. Alameda ~treet; Vernon Brewing Co.,

It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the
communioations be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.

A communication from J. R. Molony Co., regarding the
insuring of team used in connection with streat cleaning, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
the communication be filed. Motion carried.
The report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Moore & DeSellem, was read. .
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that same
be laid over until the next meeting of the Council. Motion carried.
A communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting ~lec-
trical Engineer, submitting a report of operations of electric
system by Southern California Edison Company for March, 1940, was
read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
same be filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Elec-
trical Engineer, regarding certain improvement to be made in Vernon
Diesel Generating Plant, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that same
be referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association. Motion
carried.
Resolution No. 1019, a Resolution of the City Council
of the City of Vernon to compromise a Claim, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that
Resolution No. 1019 be adopted. Motion carri~d.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light,
Power, Water, Building and PurchaSing, as of May 8, 1940, were read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider, that same
stand approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of
the City Engineer, were read.

Street, approximately 1238' east of Soto Street.
Application 6923: Safeway Stores, to construct driveway
on east side of Alameda Street, approximately 506' south of Vernon
Avenue;
APrlication 6924: B. G. Rhodes, to construct driveway
on east side 0 Seville Avenue, approximately 83' north of Fruit-
land Road. .
Application 6925: Southern California Edison Co., to
remove 40 poles on east side of Soto Street, between 26th Street
and Fruitland Road.

Application 6938: Southern California Gas Co., to re-

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider, that the
applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $10,675.52
were read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider that the
demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
