19400618 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HE~ TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 1940, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT THE CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Scheider, Peralta. Councilmen absent; Levy It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting be suspended. Motion carried. A communication and application for a spur track franchise by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, to cross Boyle Avenue, to serve the Aluminum Company, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed. Motion carried. ORDINANCE NO. 534, an ordinance of the City of Vernon, granting a Franchise to the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad Company, a corporation, and its Lessee, Union Pacific Railroad Company, a corporation, and its successors and Assigns, a fran- chise to construct, maintain and operate two (2) spur tracks across and upon Boyle Avenue in the City of Vernon, and repeal- ing ordinances No. 529 and 531, was read for the ~irst reading. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that Ordinance No. 534, be passed for the first reading. Motion carried. A circ~ter from the Los Angeles County Council of American Legion, regardi~ subversive activities in Los Angeles County, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A circular letter from California Legislature Daily Journal, regarding preservation of scrap iron, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Weisstein Bros., & Survol, Grocers, requesting a permit to operate a warehouse at 2525 Fruitland Road, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. -1- 279 A communication from Bowles Bros., Co., requesting a permit to operate a food distributing business at 2365 E. 57th Street, was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Hansen's Vegetable Concentrates, to sell and deliver Fresh Raw Fruit and Vegetable Juices within the City of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from American Engineering & Machine Co.~ to conduct a business of fabricating metals and machinery at ~335 E. 52nd Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from George J. Holman Jr., requesting a permit to operate service station located at 2800 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Mot~on carried. A communication from Nehi Beverage Company, requesting a permit to operate a beverage dispenser at Sears-Roebuck Co., 5525 Soto Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from A. J. Levy, 2318 Redondo Blvd., Los Angeles, requesting a permit to operate a box lunch busi- ness within the City of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communication be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms, requesting permits to haul refUse from their respective premises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon, were read: Wayne Pump Co., 5100 Santa Fe Avenue; Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Co., from right-of-ways within City; Charles Harley Company, 2522 E. 25th street; Howard Supply Co., 5125 Santa Fe Avenue; and Byron-Jackson Co., 2301 E. Vernon Avenue. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the communications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. The report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Pera~ta, that same be filed. Motion carried. -2- 280 ORDINANCE NO. 533, an ordinanoe of the City Council of the City of Vernon, granting a franchise to Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co., to relocate lead track No. 86 in Bandini Blvd., w~s presented to the Council for second reading. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that Ordinance No. 533, be laid over for the second reading. Motion carried. The Minutes of the meeting of the CoYm~littee on Light, Power, Water, Building and Purchasing as of cr~e 4, 1940, were read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider, that the Minutes stand approved as read. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: . Application 6981: Southern California Gas Company, to install gas service at 2525 Fruitland Road. Application 6982: Southern California Gas Company, to install gas service at 5167 Boyle Avenue; Application 6983: Southern California Water Company, to repair main at 2115 E. 25th Street. Application 6984: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 2024 E. 45th Street. Application 8985: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 2015 E. 25th Street. Application 6986: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 51st and Alameda Streets; Application 6987: Postal Telegraph Co., to pull nine poles on Fruitland Road, between Soto and Pacific Blvd. Application 6988: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 4815 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 6989: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 2140 E. 25th Street. Application 6990: Southern California Gas Co., to in- stall 65' of 3" gas main in east side of Magnolia Ave., 537' north of Slauson Avenue. Application 6991: Southern California Gas Co., to in- stall gas service at 5708 Magnolia Avenue. Application 6992: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 2140 E. 25th Street. Application 8993: Modern Pattern & Foundry Co., to make sewer connection at 0'108 Magnolia Avenue. Application 6994: Griffin Wheel Co., to construct driveway and depressed durb on north side of 55th Street, -3- 28:1 approximately 1192' east of Alameda street. A2plication 6995: B. G. Rhodes, to make sewer con- nection at' -2707 Fruitland Road. Application 6996: Southern California Gas Co., to abandon gas service on north side' of 38th Street, 164' east of Irving Street. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Scheider, that the applications be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $12,869.05 were read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
