19400716 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF. THE CITY OF VERNON HELD TUESDAY. JULY 16, 1940, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P.M., AT TEE CITY HALL 4305 SANTA.FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA Furlong. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonie, Peralta, Levy, ScheiderL Councilmen absent: None. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the Minutes of the meeting of July Bhd be suspended. Motion carried. A communication from Blythe & Co., regarding Sewer District No. 1 Bonds was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the same be referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried. A report of General Petroleum Corporation on Los Angeles County Franchise No. 781 N.S., was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the same be filed. Motion carried. A report of Francis Bates, City Engineer, on water connections was read. It was moved by Scheider, Seconded by Peralta that the same be filed and referred to the Water and Power Committee. Motion carried. A communication and report of Board of Fire Commissioners, City of Vernon regarding fire calls from American District Telegr~ph Company, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be referred to City Attorney. Motion carried. . A communication from Samuel Bakesep, 4461 Crocker Street, Los Angeles, requesting copy of zoning ordinance regarding the coating of pipe with coal tar, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Ninth District Chamber of Commerce, regarding Washington Blvd., was read.. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta the same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from ~uality Foundry & Manufg. Co., regarding the widening of Soto Street north of city boundry, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that same be tiled. It was moved by Leonis, seoonded by Soheider the same be filed. Motion oarried. A communication from Nehi Bottling Co., requesting permit to operate beverage dispenser at Aircraft Preoision Products , 2929 Santa Fe Ave. ,was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that communioa- tion be filed and permit be granted. Motion carried. A communication from Electric Steel Foundry Co., requesting permit to engage in the business of distribution of steel sheetw, bars, tubing, pipe, fittings, valves, etc., at 2700 Santa Fe Avenue, was read It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta that oommunica- tion be filed and permit be granted. Motion carried. A communication from Fred Hughes~ 1466 W. 28th Street, Los Angeles, requesting permit to truck in ore, crushing, grinding, float~ ing. The tailings to be run into Consolidated Rock Company pit, on E. 57th Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the same be ~iled. Motion carried. A communication from Bethlehem Steel Company regarding parking conditions on E. Slauson Avenue near entrance to their plant was read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy that same be referred to the Police Department. A communication from Modern Iron Works, requesting permis- sion to move into premises of 4850 Pacific B1va., a small field of ice, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communication be granted. Motion carried. A report of Fire Department on application of Oscar Z. Ross, for permit to operate an/upholstering business at 2704 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. Fire Department recommends that applioation be gral ted. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the report be filed and the recommendation be concurred in. Motion oarried. A communication from Western Auto Supply Co., requesting permit to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of the City of Vernon was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Motion carried. 2~)2 A cammunication from Swift & Co., requesting permit to dump Fuller's earth from refinery into dump located at 2900 S. Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seoonded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the Fire Qhief for report. Motion carried. A report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the same be filed. A communication from the City Engineer recommending the acceptance of work done by P & J Artukovick in connection with 57th Street Waste Water Drain, and approving the payment of $934.67, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and the work accepted and demand in the sum of $934.67 be ordered paid. Motion carried. A communication from the City Engineer, submitting demands in the sum of $10,282.07, representing amounts due City of Los Angeles, on sewer contract as of August 1, 1940, was read. It was moved by Scheider, Seconded by Peralta that the oommunication be filed and the demand in the sum of $10,282.07, be approved and ordered paid. Motion carried. The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Building and PurchaSing, as of July 2, 1940, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta, that the same stand approved as read. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer were read. Application 7043: Hercules Foundry Co., to oil roadway on Els Boyle Ave., Approx. 35 ft. S/0_S1auson Ave. Application 7044: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main In S/S 38th Street, 245 ft. wlo Ross Street. Application 7045: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main In 25th Street, 400 ft. W/O Santa Fe Avenue. ~lication 7046: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main~ 2010 E. 25th Street. Application 7047: Southern California Water Co., to repair water main at 2026 E. 25th Street. Application 7048: Hoffman Bros. Packing Co., to construct curb and driveway at 2731 S. Soto Street. Motion carried. Report of C. A. Heinze# Consulting Engineer on operation of the City electric system by Southern California Edison Co., for the month of May, 1940, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed. Motion carried. Demands on the general fund in the sum of $5,527.78 were read. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Levy that demands be allowed, and warrants drawn. for same. Motion carried. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the meeting afjourn.
