19400917 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1940, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL 4305 SANTA FE AVE., VERNON, CALIFORNIA The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Levy, and Leonis. Counci~en absent: Scheider. It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the Minutes of the meeting of September 3rd, 1940, be suspended. Motion carried. Unfinished Business A communication from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company in reference to Resolution No. 1024 was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same be referred to the City Clerk for answer. Motion carried. New Business A communication from Mr. Lloyd Aldrich, City Engineer of the City of Los Angeles regarding major disaster and emegency relief was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the matter be referred to the City Engineer for reply. Motion carried. A communication from Hideo Itami requesting a permit to oper- ate a restaurant at 2613 Fruitland Road was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the same be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from M. L. Stewart requesting a permit to operate a restaurant at 2700 Fruitland Road was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be filed and a permit granted subject to the apProval of the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from H. W. Lomas, 359 Blackshear Street, Los Angeles, requesting a permit to sell lunches within the city was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from Machinists Tool & Supply Company regarding a parking zone at 3690 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communi- cation be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion car- ried. A communication from Vernon Tool Company requesting two pedes- trian lanes across East 37th Street was read. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Leonis that the matter be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. 1. 308 A communication from V. G. Spender regarding parking zones at 1938 East Vernon Avenue was read. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Leonis that the com- munication be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from the Fibreboard Products Company request- ing a permit to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of Vernon was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communi- cation be filed and the permit granted. Motioncarried. A report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the same be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Carl A. Heinze, Cons~lting Engineer re- questing authority to dispose of approximately 800 pounds of scrap copper to the Finkelstein Foundry Supply Company at $8.63 per hundred, was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communi- cation be filed and the engineer be instructed to dispose of said scrap copper at the price named in the communication. Motion carried. A report of Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Electrical Engineer on operation of the city's electric system by Southern California Edison Company for the month of July, 1940. was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that t he report be filed. Motion carried. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that all contracts for brochures advertising the City of Vernon be approved first by the City and all originals of photographs remain the property of the City of Vernon. Motion carried. At this time, the Fire Cammittee presented to the City Council several designs for firemens' badges and requested the approval of the Council to purchase the same. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the Fire Com- mittee be authorized to purchase the necessary badges for the Fire Department. Motion carried. The ~ollowing applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: Application 7177: Southern California Edison Company to in- stallone sidewalk anchor on H/S Fruitland Road, 545 ft. E/o Boyle Avenue, Application 7178: Axelson Machine Co., to oil Randolph Street from Boyle Avenue to a point 600 feet easterly. Application 7179: Southern California Water Company to repair water maIn at 2027 East 25th Street. ~plication 7180: General Metals Co., to ~ke sewer connection at 570l-South Boyle Avenue. Application 7181: Sears Roebuck Co. to make sewer connection at 5525 South Soto Street.. . . 2 309 Application 7182: Hill Bros. Furniture Co. to pave ~our ~oot strip between property line and existing pavement on East 48th street, 710 feet E/O Alameda Street. Application 7183: Southern Cali~ornia Water Company to repair main at 2151. East 51st Street. Ap2lication 7184: Southern California Water Company to repair water main at 2030 East 25th Street. Application 7185: Southern California .Gas Company to abandon gas service on E/S Magnolia Ave., 1000 ~eet S/O Fruitland Road. Application 7186: Southern California Gas Company to abandon gas service at 5575 Magnolia Avenue. Application 7187: Southern California Gas Company to install gas servIce at 1816 East 25th Street. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the applica- tions be filed, and permits granted. Motion carried. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta tha.t the Minutes o~ the Committee on Light,Power, Water, Building and Purchasing be approved as read. The motion carried. Demands on the general fUnd in the sum o~ $10,896.50 were read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the same.
