MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, OCTOBER l, 1940, AT
THE HOUR OF THREE 0' CLOCK P. M.,
AT THE CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVE.,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong.
CounCilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Levy, and Leonis.
Councilmen absent:
Scheider.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Peralta that the reading of the
Minutes of the meeting of September l7, 1940, be suspended. Motion carried.

Unfinished Business
The report of the Police Department on the application of M. L.
Stewart for a permit to conduct a restaurant at 2700 Fruitland Road was
read. The report recommended that the application be granted.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the report of the
Police Department be filed and the recommendation concurred in, and a permit
be issued. Motion carried. \
New Business
A communication from the City Engineer, requesting authority to employ
Mr. Cl~rence S. Forncrock as a panoramic draftsman (temporarily) at a salary
of $200.00 per month was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication be
filed and the City Engineer be authorized to employ the said Clarence S.
Forncrock as panoramic draftsman at a salary of $200.00 per month. Said po-
sition to continue at the pleasure of the .council. Motion carried
A communication from the Governor's office of the State of California
regarding the development of defense planning within the State, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the same be referred
to the City Engineer for reply. Motion carried.
. A communication from Mrs. Josephine Lara requesting a permit to oper-
ate a small grocery store at 20l8i East 45th Street was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and a permit granted. The motion carried.
A communication from A. Pawl, ll184 State Street, Lynwood, California,
requesting permission to operate a Welding and repair shop at 2371 East
51st Street was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Skilsaw Inc., requesting a permit to conduct a
portable electric tool business at 2645 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A 0' ommunication from Mr. J. E. Spillane, Tractor and Truck Parts Co.,
for a permit to conduct an automotive parts business at 4443 Santa Fe
Avenue was read.

It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the same be re-
ferred to the Police Department for a report. Motion Carried.

A communication from Dr. Pepper Bottling Co., requesting permission
to place vending machines at Fibreboard Products Co.~ 4444Paclfic Blvd.~
Standard Packing Co., 2440 East Vernon Avenue, and Sears Roebuck Co.~
5625 Santa Fe Avenue was read.
It was moved by Leonie and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permission granted. Motion carried.
The report of Haskins and Sells for the period ending ;rune 30th,
1940 was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the report be
filed. Motion carred.
A report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
A communication from Bank of America, 49th and santa Fe Avenue,
regarding parking conditions' was read.
It w~s moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
It. communication from Brown Bevis Equipment Co., regarding parking
conditions at 4900 Santa Fe Avenue was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be referred to the Police ~partment. Motion carried.
A.communication from Jack Tyre Glass Co., regarding parking condi-
tionsat 2039 East 38th Street was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same be re-
ferred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms were read in which they
requested permission to haul refuse from their premises upon and along
the public streets of Vernon: M. L. stewart, 2700 Fruitland Road, and
Kennedy Name Plate Co., 4501 Pacific Boulevard.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tions be filed and permission granted. Motion carrie~.
A communication from Chamberlain Company to conduct an industrial
and foundry supply business at 2026 East 37th Street was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permission be granted. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
BUilding, and Purchasing, as of September l7, 1940, were read. _
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same stand-
approved as read. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the City

Application 7201: Norris Stamping Co. to make sewer connection
at 5215 South Boyle Avenue.

Application 7211: L. A. Railway Co., to remove one pole and change
underground cable on E/S Santa Fe Avenue, approximately ll3 feet N/O
Paciric Boulevard.

Demands on the general fund in the sum of $7,965.77 were read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the demands be al-
lowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion carried.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the meeting ad-
, journ to October 8, 1940 at two o'clock P. M. Motion carried.
