19401119 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1940, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O' clock P. M., AT THE' CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong. Councilmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Leonis, and Scheider. Councilmen absent: Levy. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Scheider that the reading of the Minutes of the meeting of November 6th, 1940, be suspended. Motion carried. Unfinished Business ORDINANCE NO. 537. An ordinance changing the name of Magnolia Avenue to Alcoa Avenue was read for second reading. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No. 537 be passed for second reading. Motion carried. ORDINANCE NO. 537. An ordinance changing the name of Magnolia Avenue to Alcoa Aven~e was read for third and final reading. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No. 537 be adopted. Motion carried by the following vote: AYES: NOES: ABSENT: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Scheider. None Levy The communication from Mr. J. R. Hayden, Assistant to Presid~nt of Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company regarding their Engineer, Mr. Varnum, was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be referred to the City Clerk for reply. Motion carried. The report of the Fire Chief on the application of Mr. H. R. Murray for a permit to operate a service station and repair Shop at 5501 South Boyle Avenue.was read. (The Fire Department recommended that the application be granted. ) It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that the report.be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried. The communication from the DeLuxe Box Lunch & Catering Company was readl requesting a permit to conduct a restaurant or lunch room at Luer Pack1ng Company, 3026 East Vernon Avenue. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed and a permit granted subject to the approval of the 'Police Depart- ment. Motion carried. New Business A communication from Mr. Francis Bates, City Engineer, regarding the improvement of East Vernon Avenue for state gasoline fUnds was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that Resolution No. 839 be adopted. Motion carried. A communication from Mutual Chemical Company of America, New York, re- garding the purchase of 1000 K. W. Diesel Engine and necessary switch gear was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and that the City Clerk answer the same. Motion carried. A communication from H & J. Truck Company, 2029 East 46th Street, re- questing the installation of street light near their premises, was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be referred to the Police Department and the City Engineer for a report. Motion carried. A communication from Harry Katz, requesting a permit to conduct a whole- sale meat business at 3049 East Vernon Avenue was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried. A communication from Mr. Ernest K. Hartman, Attorney, 433 South Spring Street, Los Angeles, regarding the purchase and zoning of lot 20, Tract 6452 (Between 46th and 48th Streets on ~eville Street) was read. . It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and that the City Clerk answer the same. Motion carried. A communication from Mr. C. J. Iverson, Cnatsworth, California, re- questing a permit to operate a restaurant on Lots 12 and 13 of Tract 65, Aldine Square Tract was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and that the City Clerk answer the same. Motion carried. A communication from the Merco Corporation, requesting a permit to manu- facture airplane parts and general machine shop work at 3636 Irving Street was read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication be, filed and a permit granted. Motion carried. Communications from the following firms were read in which they requested permission to haul refuse from the following named addresses upon and along the public streets of Vernon: Home Appliance Delivery and Service Company 5205 Santa Fe Avenue; J. A. Pipe & Machinery Company, 5616 Santa Fe Avenue: It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Scheider that the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. A report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried. A report of Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on operation of electric system b~ Southern California Edison Company for the month of September was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried. A communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, regarding the examination of the Vernon District Office of the Southern California Edison Com- pany was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Build- ing and Purchasing of November 6, 1940, were read. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Scheider that the same stand ap- proved as read. Application 7307: Byron Jackson Company, to construct depressed curb and apron for driveway at 2301 East Vernon Avenue. Application 7314: Southern California Edison Company to install one pole and one anchor in WIS Soto Street 270 feet N/o 37th Street. ~ 3. 323 Application 7315: Southern California Edison Gompany, to replace 500 volt pole on E/SJaboneria Road, 700 feet S/O 26th street. Application 7316: Southern California Edison Company, to install side- walk anchor in 8/S. Vernon Avenue, ~70 feet E/O st. Charles Street. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that the ap- plications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the general fund in the sum.of $11,960.47 were read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that the demands be allowed and warrants drawn for the same. Motion carried.
