MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1940, AT
THE HOUR OF THREE 0 I CLOCK P. M., AT
THE CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE,
VERNON, CALIFOm~IA.
The meeting was called to order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong.
CounciLmen present: Furlong, Peralta, Leonis, and Levy.
CounciLmen absent: Scheider.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta thattbe reading of the
Minutes of the meeting of November 19, 1940 be suspended. Motion carried.
Unfinished Business
Report of City Engineer on request of H & J. Truck Company, requesting
street light on East 46th Street near their premises,was.read~CityEngi:neer
recommends the installation of light, also that the candle-power of lights
be increased at the intersections of Boyle, Magnolia, and Downey Road on East
Vernon Avenue, and that lights be placed in Boyle and Magnolia Avenues, north-
erly of Los Angeles Junction Railway crossing. The annual additional charge
will be $129.00. .
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed
and that the recommendation of the City Engineer be acted upon. Motion car-
ried.
New Business
A communication from Victor Belting & Rubber Company, 2316 East 38th
Street regarding a nuisance being committed by a nearby sawduet company
was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communication oe
referred to the City Engineer and Police Department for ~et~on. Motton car-
ried.

A communication from the Sterling Meat Company, 2501 Eas.t Vernon Avenue,
regarding a nuisance being committed by pigeons was read.
It was moved by Leoni~ and seconded by Levy that the communication be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communtcation from the Federal Outfitting Company, 6515 Pacific
Boulevard, Huntington Park, California, requesting a permit to solicit the
within city was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication be
referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried.
A communication was read from Joseph Mesmer, 3050 East Slauson Avenue,
Huntington Park, together with a copy of a letter from the Railroad Commis-
sion of the State of California, regarding signals at 25th Street, 41st
Street, Vernon and 55th Streets, and Alameda Street.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the communication be .
referred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion carried.
A communication from National Aircraft Equipment Company, requesting
information as to whether it is possible to construct a steel and corrugated
iron building at the corner of Hampton and Chambers Streets was read. The
building is to be used for a machine shop, pattern Shop, non-~errous foundry
and storage purposes.

It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the"communication be
laid over until receipt of a report from the Building Engineer. Motion car-
ried.
A communication from Spacarb Inc., requesting a permit to install coca-
cola dispensing machine in the Sears-Roebuck warehouse was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication be
filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Peter .I. Cena, requesting a permit to operate a
service station at 5220 Santa Fe Avenue. was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communication be
filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Crook Company, requesting the painting of parking
zones on the curb at 2820 to 2828 Santa Fe Avenue was read.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Leonis that the communication
be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Byron-.Iackson Company requesting the painting of
a pedestrian crosswalk at 2301 East Vernon Avenue was read~
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communication be
referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from the Western Machinery Company requesting the paint-
ing of a curb at 3649 Santa Fe Avenue for limited parking was,read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same be referred
to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communicatj.on from Lane-Wells Company requesting that they be permitted ~
to paint the curb red on either side of their parking lot near 5610 South Soto
Street was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same b~eferr~d to
to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A report or the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed.
Motion carried.
A report of the Police Department on the application of the DeLuxe Box
Lunch & Catering Company requesting a permit to operate lunch room at Luer
Packing Company, 3026 East Vernon Avenue was read. The Police Department
recommends that application be granted.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the report be filed
and a permit granted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 840. A Resolution approving the memorandum of agreement
for expenditure of a 1/4th cent gas tax allocated for streets of major im- .
portance was read.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by ,Levy that Resolution No. 840 be
adopted. Motion carried. i
ORDINANCE NO. 538, an ordinance of the City of Vernon regulating the
dumping of cess-pool pumping originating in the City of Vernon, and prohibit-
ing all other cess-pool dumping was read for the first reading.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No. 538 be
passed for the first reading. Motion carried.
It was moved and seconded that the Fire Chief, Police Chief, and City
Engineer make a survey of the city and make a report and recommendation on
parking cars on the city streets. Motion carried.

quested permission to haul refuse from the following named addresse~ upon

East 37th Street; Cook Heat Treating Corp., 3334 East Slauson Avenue;
DeLuxe Brands Co., 2920 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communications
be filed ~nd permits granted. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water
Building, and Purchasing of November 19, 1940, were read.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the same stand ap-
proved as read. Motion carried.
