MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF TEE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON,
HELD TUESDAY, JANUARY 7th, 1941, AT
THE HOUR OF THREE 0' CLOCK P. M., AT
THE CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE ~VENUE,
VERNON, CALIFORNIA
The meeting was called to. order by the Mayor, J. J. Furlong.
Councilmen present: Furlong, Leonis, Peralta, Scheider, and Levy.
Councilmen absent: None.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that the reading
of the Minutes of the previous meetings be suspended. Motion carried.
A communication was read from the Planning Congress of Los Ang-
eles County regarding meeting to discuss flood control.
It was moved by Scheider and seconde4 by Peralta that the com-
munication be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the General Petroleum Corporation on gross receipt and
franchise check for period ending October 31, 1940, was read.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the Report be
filed an~ referred to the Auditor. Motion carried.
A communication was read from the D & M. Distributing Company re-
questing a permit to operate a gasoline and oil distributing business at
2328 East Vernon Avenue.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that the communi-
cation be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Spacarb of Los Angeles was read, requesting
a permit to install Coca-Cola machine at 2929 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the communica-
tion be filed and the permit be granted. Motion carried.
A communication from H. E. Zillgitt was read requesting a permit
to operate a matrix and sterotyping business at 4547 Produce Plaza.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from U. C. Murcell, Inc. was read, requesting a
permit to operate a steel fabricating shop at 5400 Santa Fe Avenue.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from G. F. Bradbury was read requesting a transfer
of' box lunch license from B. F.Rugg who now has a license.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication from Eeis M. Vorce was read requesting a permit to
opera te a box lunch route in the c1 ty.
It Was moved by Scheider and seconded by Levy that the communication
be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Lava Metals Company was read requesting a per-
mit to operate a machine Shop and to pperate an electric furnace at 2335
East 52nd Street.
It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried.

A communication from George C. Paonessa was read requesting a permit
to operate new and used machinery within the city; no location mentioned.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed. Motion carried.
Communications were read from the following firms in which they have
requested permission to haul refuse from the following named addresses:
Advance Saw Works, 2665 Santa Fe Avenue; Leo Grenot, 2233 East 37th
Street; Canada Dry Inc., 4501 District Boulevard; Wilshire Oil Company,
2455, 2411 East 27th street and 2600 East 28th Street (renewal); Safeway
Stores, 1925 East Vernon Avenue; U. C. Marcell, Inc., 5400 Santa Fe
Avenue.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Levy that the communications
be filed and the permits granted. Motion carried.
A communication from Advance Saw Works was read requesting green zone
in front of 2665 Santa Fe Avenue be repainted.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
A communication was read from the County of Los Angeles for assessing
and collecting taxes, approved by the city Attorney.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed. Motion carried.
A report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
The Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
BUilding, and Purchasing of December 17, 1940, were read.
It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the same stand ap-
proved as read. Motion carried.

Mechanical Foundries to construct driveway and curb at
Santa Fe Avenue.
Southern California Water Company to repair water ser-
vice at 2024 East 45th Street.
Southern California Telephone Company to place conduit
across Vernon Avenue.
Coast Packing Company to construct'connection to exist-
ing storm drain in Vernon Avenue.

It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that
the applications be filed and the permits granted. Motion carried.
Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $7,741.66 were
read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that
the demands be allowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried.
