19410218 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY C OUNCILOF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18" 1941, AT THE HOUR OF THREE 0' CLQCK P.. M., AT THE CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA The.meeting was called to order by the Mayor" J. J. Furlong. Councilmen pr~sent: Furlong, Leonis" Peralta" Schetder, and Levy. Councilmen absent: None. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Peralta that the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting be suspended. Motion carried. At this time, the City Clerk announced that he had one bid on his desk for furnishing to the city a one-half ton truck. . It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the Clerk read the bid. Motion carried. ' At this time the Clerk read the bid from the General MQtor Truck & Coach Company, wherein they agreed to furnish the city one truck for $618.00 and they would allow $206.00 on the old truck, making a net price to the city of $412.00. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralt;a t.liat the bid be filed and the City Clerk be instructed to purch&se the truck at the price set forth in the bid. Motion carried. A communication was read from Francis Bates, City Engineer" regarding a request of pioneer-Flintkote Company for a subway under 55th Street. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and the permit be granted, provided the City Engineer could receive" for and on behalf of the City" satisfactory commitments for the widening and im- proving of 55th Street. Motion carried. A communication was read from Francis Bates, the City Engineer,' regarding, a cave-in of the pavement in 57th Street. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed. Motion carried. A communication was read from the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, regarding a method to be used in arriving at the purchase price of tax-deeded lands proposed to be purchased by cities. ~ It was moved by Levy and seconded by Leonis that the communication be filed. ) Motion carried. A Franchise Report from the Southern California Gas Company was read on franchise numbers 89, 270, 463, and 514, together with a check in the sum of $655.57. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be referred to the Finance Conqn:ittee. Motion carried. A Franchise Report from the Southern California Gas Company was read on franchise number 467 (no mains laid). It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Levy that the communication be filed. Motion carried. A communieation was read from the Northwestern Hardwoods requesting a permit to conduct a lumber business at 2302 East 48th Street. It was moved by Sch.~de~~ and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and a permit granted. Motion carried. A communication was read from the Automatic Canteen Company# requesttng a permit to operate a vending machine at 4494 East 49th Street. ' . It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and a permit be granted. Motion carried. A conmunication. from the Dime Cab Company# Huntington Park# requesting a permit to operate five taxicabs within the city#was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communication be re- ferred to the Committee of the Whole. Motion'carried. A communication was read from the Vernon Tool Company regarding the painting of two pedestrian lanes across East 37th3treet. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by Leonis that the communication be referred to the' Police Department. Motion carried. " A conmunication was read from the Gilmore Oil Company regarding parking con- ditionsat 27th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Peralta and seconded by'Leonis that the commuriication be re- fered to the Police Department. Motion carried. A communication from the Southern California Gas ICompany was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be referred to the Committee. Motion carried. Communications were read from the following firms in which they have re- quested permission to haul refuse from the following named addresses: Northwest Engineering Company# 3707 Santa Fe Avenue; Pioneer-Flintkote Company, 55th and Alameda Streets; O-K Union Inc.# 2300 East 38th Street; Advance Saw Warks# 2665 Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and the permits granted. Motion carried. A report of the Police Department was read; It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the City of Vernon pay to the City of Los Angeles the amount that is now due on the sewer contract. Motion carried. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that Mr. Edward R. Young be employed to assistant the City Attorney in reference to re-zoning the city. Motion carried. The Minutes of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Building, and Pur- chasing were read. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Levy that the Minutes stand ap- proved as read. Motion carried. The following application# all having the approval of the City Engineer# were readf 347 Application 7517: Coast Packing Co. to construct a two-inch asphalt concrete Pavement in shoulder in S/S Vernon Avenue anQ W/S Downey Road. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the application be laid over until the next meeting. Motion carried. Application 7518: Moore Machinery Co. to construct depressed curb, driveway and sidewalk on N/S Vernon Avenue E70 Santa Fe Avenue. Application 7519: Atlas Meat Company to make stor.m drain connection in N/S Vernon Avenue, approximately 145 feet E/O Alcoa Avenue. Application 7520: Aluminum Company to make sewer connection at 5151 Alcoa Avenue. Application 7521: Southern California Water Company to repair water main at 1951 East 51st Street. Application 7522: Moore Machinery Company to construct sidewalk in E/S Santa Fe Avenue, li/O Vernon Avenue. Application 7523: Southern California Gas Company to lower main in Boyle Avenu. S/O Slauson Avenue. Application 7524: Southern California Gas Company to repair curb valves in W/S Alcoa Avenue, 300 feet S/O Fruitland ~oad. . Application 7525: Gilmore Oil Company, to construct depres~ed curb, driveway and drain through curb at 2423 East 28th Street. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the applications be filed and the permits granted. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the. sum of $23,851.17, were read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the demands be al- lowed and warrants drawn. Motion carried. It was moved by Leonis and seconded by Scheider that t he meeting adjourn.
