MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETINg
OF THE CITY C OUNC IL OF THE CITY
OF VERNON HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY
3, 1942, AT THE HOUR OF THREE
O'CLOCK P. M., AT THE CITY HALL,
4305 SA~fTA FE AVENUE, VERNON,
CALIFORNIA.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Lepnis.
Councilmen Present:
Messrs. Leonis, Furlomg,
Scheider, Peralta, Levy.
Councilmen Absent:
None.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the Minutes
of the previous meeting be approved without reading. Motion carried.
Communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, requesting the
City Council to employ M.M. Murray, a draftsman, at a salary of$180.00 per
month replacing L. V. Olson, resigned; also recommending the employment of
Mary L. Eresa as Clerk at a salary of $120.00 per month, replacing Jack Griffi~
resigned.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed, and that M. M. Murray be employed as draftsman at a
salary of $~80.00 per month; and, Mary L. Eresa be employed as Clerk at a
salary of $120.00 per month, each to work at the pleasure of the City Council.
Motion carried.
Communication from the Southern Ca1if6rnia Edison Company sub-
mitting application for franchise along Boyle Avenue from south boundary to
Fruitland Road was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Furlong that the ~ plication
be referred to the consulting Electrical Engineer and City Attorney.
Motion carried.
Of
Petib~submitted by E. J. Stanton & Son, signed by a number of
industrialists, requesting that traffic signals be installed at unprotected
crossings along Alameda Street between 25th and 55th Streets was read.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the entire
matter be filed and referred to the Vernon Industrial Development Association.
Motion carried.
Communication from C. W. Granneman requesting that a yellow
loading zone be established at 2411 East 26th Street.
It was moved by Levy and seconded l)yrFurlong that the communication
be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from the Vernon Lightning Blue Print Inc. request-
ing a twenty minute parking zone be established at 5300 Santa Fe Avenue was
read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Furlong that the
communication be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Cherry-Burrell Corp. requesting a loading
zone be established on Chamber Street near Pacific~~oulevard was read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Furlong that the communi-
cation be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from the United States Hardware & Paper Co.,
requesting that curb on the north side of 26th Street, east of Soto Street,
be painted red.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Furlong. that the same
be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.

Communication from International Longshoremen's and, Ware-
housemen's Union, Local 26, requesting a safety zone be painted across
25th Street from Los Angeles By-Products Co., to Scale House.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed and the City Clerk be instructed to answer the communi-
cation informing the writer that matters of this character must come from
the occupants of adjacent property. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Furlong that the san e
be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Fire Chief addressed to the Fire
Commissioners was read, requesting the appointment of L. C. Husted, as a
fire inspector, and L. A. Harris, as Gamewell maintenance man, and the
appointment of two firemen to take the place of Husted and Harris, said
request having the approval of the Fire Commission.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed and the request of the Fire Chief granted. Motion carried.
Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water,
Building and Purchasing, of the City Council of the City of Vernon, and
the meeting held January 20, 1942, were read.
It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Levy that the
minutes of the committee be filed and the action of the committee therein
stated be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, sub-
mitting bids he had received fram scrap copper, recommending that the ,bid
of the Berg Metals Co. be accepted and the scrap copper sold at $9.50 per
hundred, said bid being the highest and best bid obtainable.
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the
communication be filed and the scrap copper refe~red to by the Consulting
Electrical Engineer be sold to the Berger Metals Co. at $9.50 per hundred.
Communication from the Fire Chief requesting permission to
purchase, in the name of the city, a station wagon for a sum of money in
excess of $500.00. I
It was moved by Levy and seconded by Peralta. that the matter
be referred to the City Attorney for an opinion as to the power of the
city in this matter. Motion carried.
