19420217 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD TUESDAY.FEBRUARY 17, 1942. AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P. M."AT THE CITY HALL, 430S SANTA FE AVENUE" VERNON, CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. Councilmen Present: Messrs. Leonis, Furlong, Sche~er, Peralta, Levy. Councilmen Absent: None. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Scheider that the Minutes of the previous meeting be approved without reading. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer recommending the acceptance of work in 55th Street done by the Griffith Company. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Levy that the communi- cation be filed and the work done by Griffith Company in 55th Street be accepted. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer recommending the acceptance of work done by the Griffith Company in Vernon Avenue was read. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Levy that the communi- cation be filed and the work done improving Vernon Avenue by the Griffith Company be accepted. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer recommending that the request of the United States Hardware & Paper Co., heretofore made to the City Council requesting that the curbing on the south side of 26th Street be painted red, be denied. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed, and the request of the United States Hardware & Paper Co., requesting that the curbing on the south side of 26th Street be painted red, be denied. Motion carried. Communication from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, together with Indemnity Agreement executed by the Huntington Land & Impz-ovement Co. in connection with issuance of an excavation permit to C. O. Sparks and Mundo Engineering Co., on portions of Lot 5 of Chipley and Bakez- Tract, was read. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and that the Indemnity Agreement be accepted, and that the Mayoz- and City Clerk be authorized and instructed to execute the necessary papers in connection with said excavation, and that the permit be granted to C. O. Sparks and.Mundo Engineering Company for permission to excavate on portions of Lot 5 of Chipley and Baker Tract. Motion carried. Communication from Southern California Gas Company, together with report on Los Angeles County Franchise Ordinance No. 467, was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from Aluminum Company of America, regarding the paving of Alcoa Avenue between .Fruitland Road and Slauson Avenue, was read. 15 It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the City Attorney for reply. Motion carried. Communication from the Los Angeles By-Products Co., requeat.- ing the painting of a pedestrian crossing on East 25th Street, lJast~'of-:. Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from the American Can Company, ret.esting the re-painting of curbing along Santa Fe Avenue, between 48th and 49th Streets, was read. It was moved by Furlong and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the Poliee Department. Communieation from California Stucco Company, Ltd., regard- ing refuse along 25th Street, causing tire blow-outs to their equipment, rrwas read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the Poliee Department for report. Motion carried. Communieation from Dr. Harry F. Becker, City Health Offieer, ~~egarding the control of tuberculosis by supervision of eases with X-ray, skin tests, and visiting nurses, recommending passing of a Resolution asking Los Angeles County Health Department to assume responsibility of tuberculosi~ control in the City of Ve~n9n, was read. It was moved by Seheider and seconded by Peralta that the eommunication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from the City of Compton, together with certified copy of Ordinance providing for Co-ordinated Fire Fighting Service upon a reciproeal basis, was read. . It was aoved by Levy and seconded by Peralta that the same be filed and referred to the Fire Department. Motion carried. Communication from W. B. Small, requesting permit to conduct and operate a garage in the rear of 2750 South Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Furlong that the communi- cation 'be filed and referred to the Fire Department. Motion carried. Communication from. Chas. T. .Taylor & Co., requesting a permit to conduct a used machinery and equipment business at 2050 E. 51st Street, was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded by Furlong that the communication be filed and referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. Communication from Aluminum Pattern & Brass Foundry at 4&36 Pacific Boulevard, requesting a permit to operate a brass and aluminum foundry. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralia that the communication be filed and permit gra~ted. Motion carried. Communication from Electric Tool & Supply Co., requesting a permit to conduct a portable electric tool business at 5320 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. :1& It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and the permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Robert E. Field, requesting a permit to dis- pense lunches and packaged foods from lunch stands on properties of the Signal and Richfield Service Stations located at 52nd and 53rd Streets and Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed and referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. Communication from the following firms for permits to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the public streets of Vernon, were read. Sears, Roebu.ck & Co.; Union Packing Co.; Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co.; J. O. Oltmans, General Contractor; Lord-Babcock, Inc.; Wayne Pump Co.; Pioneer-Fllntkote Co.; M. A. Newmark & Company; and, Douglas Air- craft Company, Inc. It was moved by FUrlong and seconded by Scheider that the communications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the City Clerk be authorized to have the telephone company place a telephone in the Police Department connecting with the sheriff's office for emergency in case of blackout. Motion carried. Minutes of the meeting of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Building and Purchasing, of the City Council of the City of Vernon; and the meeting held February 17, 1942, were read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be approved. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Levy and seconded Scheider that the same be filed. Motion carried. Report of the Consulting Electrical Engineer on operation of the electrical':. system of the City of Vernon for the month of December, 1941, was read. It was moved by Scheider and seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried.
