19421215 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD ON TUES- DAY, DECEMBER 15, 1942, AT THE HOUR OF THREE O'CLOCK P. M.AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY HALL, 4305 Santa Fe Avenue, VERNON CALIFORNIA. The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. COUNCILMEN PRESENT: Messrs. Leonis,Peralta, Levy, Poxon and Scheider COUNCILMEN ABSENT: None. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Levy that the Minutes of the previOUS meeting be approved. Motion carried. The City Clerk announced that this was the time and place for the hearing of any protests upon the improvement of Alcoa Avenue, as set forth in Resolution of Intention No. 1170, and read a communication from Kyle Steel Construction Co., protesting improvement of Alcoa Avenue, and also from Fred D. Kyle protesting said improvements. After a general discussion it was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the hearing on the protest, be adjourned until January 5, 1943, at the regular meeting of the City Council. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer recommending that Layne & Bowler Co., be granted an extension of time for the furnishing of the deep well turbine pump until February 1, 1943, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communication be filed. Motion carried. RESOLUTION No. 1171, a resolution extending the time for the furn- ishing of the deep' well turbine pump by Layne & Boler to February 1, 1943, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 1171 be adopted. Motion carried. Communication from Southern California Edison Co., regarding addi- tional electric service to Aluminum Company of America, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the VernOn Industrial Development Association, City Consulting Engineer Hynes and the City Attorney. Motion carried. Communication from A. G. Schoonmaker Co., of New York requesting information as to the Diesel Engines owned by the City, was read. It was movedby Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the City Clark to answer, wherein he is to inform the writer that the engines are not for sale. Motion carried. Circular letter from the Board of Supendsors together with draft 'f proposed ordinance prohibiting fortune telling, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the letter be filed and referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried. Communication from the Fire Chief requesting permission to change the fire department working time from ten and fourteen hour system to a twenty- four and twenty-four hour system to save firemen one trip to station each day, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Poxon that the communication be filed and permission granted. Motion carried. 1. 1~35 Communication from the Fire Chief requesting authority to employ Wm.R. Hoeft and W. J. Smith, as hosemen at a salary of $150.00 per month, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and permission granted. Motion carried. Communication fron Pneumatic Mining and Contracting Machinery Co., requesting permit to conduct a rental and sale of construction machinery at 2100 East 25th Street, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. Communication from Cole of California, Inc., requesting prmit to operate a restaurant on their premises at 2615 Fruitland Road for use of their employees, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the commu- nication be filed and permit granted, subject to the approval of the Police Department. Motion caDDied. Communication from General Petroleum Co., requesting permit to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the streets of the City of Vernon was read; also communication from Refractories Corporation, requesting permit to haul refuse from their premises upon and along the streets 'of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. Report of the Committee on Light, Power, water, Street, Equip- ment and Purchasing was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the Report be approved and filed. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the report be filed. Motion carried. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that when thi s meeting adjourned, it would adjourn to December 29, +942 at 10:00 O'clock A. M. Motion carried.
