19430216 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1943 AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY HALL, 4305 Santa Fe Avenue, Vernon, eali~ornia, AT 3:00 OlCLOCK P. M. The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. COUNCILMEN PRESENT: Messrs. Leonis; poxon.t. Levy Scheider and ~eralta COUNCILMEN ABSENT: None It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the reading of the minutes of the p~evious meeting be suspended. Motion carried. At this time the City Clerk announced that he had on his desk five bids from contractors, pursuant to Notice Inviting Sealed proposals and bids for the improvement of Alaoa Avenue, in the City of Vernon. It was moved by SCheider, seconded by Peralta that the City Clerk proceed to open the bids. Motion carried. At this time the bids from the following firms were opened and read aloud baDre the Board: Oswald Brothers, Griffith Company, Vernon Paving Company, C. O. Sparks & MundoEIigineering Co. and Warren Southwest Inc. . It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that all bids received be referred to the City Engineer for checking and report to the City Council. Motion carried. Communication ~rom the City Engineer requesting authority to employ Carl V. Nelson as street painter at rate of $6.00 per day, effect- ive February 11, 1943; also reguesting authority to employ Edwin W. Lindop as pump operator at salary of 1185.00 per month! also requesting authoriPT to emply Jacob S. King as carpenter at rate of ~1.50 per hour for con- struction of well house NO.7, effective February 10, 1943, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by ~cheider that the communica- tion be filed and he be authorized to employ the persons named in the com- munication at the salaries set forth. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer requesting authority to purchase auziliary belt-drive for emergency use with Liberty Gas Engine for well No.5 on E. Vernon Avenue, the equipment to cost $310.00, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and the request granted. Motion carried. Report of Southern California Gas Co.. on franchise 467 (County of Los Angeles') for period of July 1, 1942 to .l.)ecember31, 1942, was read. Communication from Venus Packing Co. requesting that curb be painted red opposite their receiving doors at 3317 E. 50th street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and re~erred to the Police Departmeht. Motion carried. Communication from Los Angeles Department of Police regarding boulevard stop signs at Alameda Street and Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that the communica- tion be referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. 1_57 Communication from A. R. Keieger requesting permit to conduct a copper plating business at 2288 E. 48th Street, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communica- tion be filed and the permit granted. RESOLUTION NO. 1189, a resolution authorizing the acceptance of credit in lieu of bond by Reliable Iron Foundry, Inc. was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 1189 be adopted. Motion carried. RESOLUTION NO. 1190, a resolution authorizing the acceptance of credit in lieu of bond by Chapman Valve Manufacturing Company, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 1190 be adopted. Motion carried. RESOLUTION NO. 1191, a resolution fixing the compensation of Fred Hurley, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 1191 be adopted. Motion carried. RESODUTION NO. 1192, a resolution fixing the compensation of G. A. Anderson, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. 1192 be adopted. Motion carried. Communication from Universal Engineering Company requesting permission to install 4 pickling tanks 36 x 24 x 60 inches using a 7~ solution of hydro-chloric or suplhure acid for processing tank treads for the T-49 Army Combat Tank at 2369 E. 51st Street, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Poxon that the communication be filed and referred to the Police and Fire Departments, for report. Communication from California Tree Service requesting permit to trim trees adjacent to Southern California Edison Company's pole lines, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Scheider that the communica- tion be referred to the City Clerk. Motion carried. Communication from Union Carbide and Carbon Corp. requesting permit to haul refuse from premises of 2315 E. 52nd Street, along and upon the streets of the City of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta thatrthe communica- tion be filed and permit granted. Telegram from J. A. Krug, Director of War Utilities was read.
