MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY
C OUNC IL OF T BE CITY OF VERN ON, HELD ON
TUESDAY, AUGUST 17th, 1943, AT THE OFFICE
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA
FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA, at 3:00 P.M.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis.
Tt was moved by Peralta, seconded by Scheider that theminutes of
the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk announced that he had on his desk
bids for the furnishing of one deep well turbine pump pursuant to Notice
Inviting Sealed Proposals and Bids, in accordance with Specifications No.
137.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Sch4ider that the City Clerk
proceed to open the bids. Motion carried.
At this time the City Clerk opened and read bids from Layne and
Bowler Co. and Peerless Pump Division of the Food Machinery Corporation.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that all bids be
referred'to the City Council and City Engineer for checking and report.
Moti on carried.
Communication from the City Engineer recommending the acceptance
of the work done ~ Griffith ~~~nQe~Alcoa Avenue, was read.

Communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on matters
of the new rate schedule by Southern California Edison Co. and the City of
Los Ahgeles,as same applies to the City of ' Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be approved and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Southern California Gas Company together with
report on Los Angeles County Franchise 463 and 467, was read.
It was moved by Seheider, seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from BU...TAY Products, Inc., requesting permit to
conduct a business of packaging of a water softener in 8 oz. and 24 oz. pacl!
ages at 4609 Hampton Street, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from United Aircraft Products, Inc. regarding the
unsanItary condition of the Commercial Cafe, 2909 Santa Fe Avenue, was
readl.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by SCheider that the communication
be filed and referred to the Police Department for report.
Communication from Eleotric Steel Foundry Co. requesting curb
painting at 2700 Santa Fe Avenu, was read, and from Klassen Company request-
ing curb painting at 2335 E. 27th Street, and from Dohrmann Hotel Supply Co.
requesting ourb painting at 2417 E. 26th Street, also were read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communications

be referred to the Police Department for report. Motion carried.
Communication from the SeQurity-First National Bank and signed
by the Western Union Telegraph Co. and others requesting curb painting at
2816 to 2828 Santa Fe-Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed and referred to the Police Department for report. Motion
carried.
Communications from the following firms for permits to haul
refuse upon and along the streets of the City of Vernon were read:
Henry Asphalt Co., :'H~L.. Harville Mfg. Co. and Baash-Ross Tool
Co.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communications
be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Report of the committee on Light, Power, Water. Street, Building
and Purchasing, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the Report be
approved and filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the report be
approved and filed. Motion carried.
Report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on operations
of electric system by Southern California EdisonCo. for the month of
June, 1943, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the report be
approved and filed. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION 1218, a resolution approving memo of agreementibr
accumulation of t cent tax allocated for streets of Mayor importance and
for street highways, was read.

It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Resolution
No. 1218 be adopted. Motion carried
ORDINANCE NO. 566, an Ordinance fixing the tax rate for the fiscal
year 1943-44 was read for first reading.
It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Peralta that Ordinance No.
566 be passed for first reading. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the City

APPLICATION 9483 - Southern California Water C~. to repair water main at
2022 E. 25th Street.
APPLICATION 9484 - Southern Califonnia WaterCo. to repair water main at
2048 E. 52nd Street.
APPLICATION 9485 - Associated Piping & Engineering Co. to construct drive-
way at 2332 E. 38th Street.
APPLICATION 9486 - Santa Fe Railway to raise tracks 2" at Slauson Avenue
and Alameda Street.
APPLICATION 9487 - United States Navy Depot to make sewer connectton at
2801 Santa Fe Avenue.
