19431019 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR lVIEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNONlf HELD ON TUESDAYlf OCTOBER 19, 1943, AT 3:00 o'clock P. M. AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY HALL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUElf VERNON, CALIFORNIA COUNCILMEN PRESENT: COUNCILMEN ABSENT: Messrs. Leonis, Shceider and Levy Messrs. Peralta and Poxon The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried. At this time the City Clerk announced that this was the time and place for the hearing of the assessment of the improvement of Alcoa Avenue as contemplated by Hesolution of Intention No. l170, and that no protests were filed in the manner provided by law or otherwise. At this time Councilman Levy introduced Resolution No. 1230, a resolution approving the assessment for the improvement of Alcoa Avenue as contemplated by Resolu- tion of Intention No. 1170, and ~oved its adoption, which was seconded by Councilman Scheider and unanimously carried. Motion carried. . Communication from the City Engineer requesting approval ~f the, employment of Katherine Kelleher as typist on September 28th and 29th, 1943 and Agripina Lopez from October 6, 1943 to the conclusion of inventory typing. Miss Lopez will work four hours per day at 75t per hour. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and the approval requested by the Engineer be given. Motion car- ried. Communication from the City Engineer requesting approval of employment of Onfore Hernandez as laborer for the street department ef- fective October 4, 1943, his salary to be at the rate of $4.80 per day, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and the action of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried. Communication from Nightingale Cafe requesting curb painting for 30 minutes parking at 5208 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communication b~ filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from U. C. Murcell, Inc., requesting curb painting for 20 minute parking on East 54th Street adjacent to 5400 Santa Fe Ivenue was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communication be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. CommunicSion from E. W. Watson requesting permit to operate the Watson Trucking Company and Harbor Freight Lines at 4601 South Soto Street was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed and laid over until the next regular meeting. Motion carried. Communication from John Harkey requesting permit to conduct a general forging and machinery equipment business at 2446 Downey Road, was read. 243 It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communica- tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Frank A. Zalaba and Charles Schair requesting permit to sell novelties and merchandise within the city, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that the communica- tion be filed and permits denied. Motion carried. Communication from American Smelting and Refining Co. requesting permission to construct a shelter at Leonis Boulevard and Downey Road was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Leonis that the communica- tion be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from Byron Jackson Co. regarding request for permit to erect steel derrick at 2301 E. Vernon Avenue was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communica- "cion be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. Communication from Kennedy Name Plate Co. requesting permit to haul refuse from premises of 4509 Pacific Blv4. was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried, RESOLUTION No. 1231, a resolution consenting to and approving action of Board of ~upervisors of Los Angeles County in adopting resolution declaring Boyle Avenue and pations of intersecting streets from Slauson Avenue to Southern boundaries of Vernon, a part of the Countysyste~ of High- ways of said Los Angeles County, was read. It was moved by Scheider, seconded by Levy that Resolution No. l23l be adopted. Motion carried. Report of the Committee oh Light, Power, Water, Street, Building and Purchasing was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the report be approved and filed. Motion carried. Communication from H. Levine Cooperage requesting permit and license to conduct a business of reconditioning steel drums at 54th and Soto Streets, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the communication be filed and laid over until the next meeting. Motion carried. The Report of the Police Department was read. APPLICATION 9602 Southern California Edison Co. to install 1 pole in sls 51st Street, 890 ft. wlo Santa Fe Avenue. APPLICATION 9603 L. A. Signal Storage Depot to make sewer connection at 2028 E. 26th Street. 2. 2,14 APPLICATION 9604 Pike Trailer Co. to construct driveway at 2615 Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Scheider that the applications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
