19431116 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF TEE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON.. EELD ON TUESDAY.. NOVEMBER L6th, 1943, AT 3:00 0' CLOCK P. M. at THE OFFICE OF TEE CITY COUNCIL, CITY HALL, 4305 Santa Fe Aven~e Vernon, California. Councilmen Present: Messrs. Leonis, Levy and Peralta Messrs. Scheider and Poxon. Counoilmen Absent: The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Levy that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried. Communication from the City Emgineer requesting authority to employ Jesus Arredondo as laborer in street department at the rate of $4.80 per day, effective as of November 8, 1943, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communioa- tion be filed and the Engineer be authorized to emplCby Jesus Arredondo as laborer in the street department at the rate of $4.80 per day, ef- fective as of November 8, 1943, Motion carried. Commun~cation from Byron Jackson Co. in regard to drilling hole on premises at 2301 E. Vernon to test certain equipment on the surfaoe, was read. ~ It was moved by Levy, seoonded by Peralta that the communi- cation be filed and the permit heretofore requested for thearection of a tow~r on their prem~ses be granted subject to the approval of the City Engineer. Motion carried. Communioation from the State Department of Publio Health in regard to certain tests of water supply, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and that Carl Wilson Laboratories be employed to test the City Water in complianoe.with the State Board of Health and he shall reoeive as compensation therefor $50.00 per month. Motion carried. Communication from Los Angeles Boara of Police Commissioners regarding installation of boulevard stop signs at Vernon Avenue and 41st Street on Alameda Street, was read. It wa s moved by Levy, sec onded by Peral ta tha t the oommunica- tion be filed and reirred to the City Engineer and Police Department. Motion carried. Bulletin No. 27 from State Director of Civilian Defense re- garding rules and regulations governing oivilian defense volunteers was read. It was moved by Peralta,seoonded by Levy that Bulletin No. 27 be filed and referred to the City Clerk and City Attorney. Motion carried. Communication from Norris Stamping and Manufacturing Co. re- questing permission to erect a tent on rear of property located at 5215 So. Boyle Aven~e from December 22nd to 27th, for purpose of holding a Christmas party for employees, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the Fire Chief with power to aot. Motion carried. Union Stock Yards in oonnection wi~h Great Western Rodeo held in connection with Live Stock show, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communi- cation be filed and referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried. , Communication from Bethlehem Steel Company requesting the installation of fire alarm call box to be installed near vicinity of their warehouse at 6023 Alcoa Avenue, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the Fire Chief, he to request Bethlehem Steel Company tofurnish the material and the City will install same. Motion carried. . Communication from Industrial Equipment Co. requesting that a permit be granted to Industrial Aircraft Co. (a subsidiary) for the construction of airplane assemblies at 4441 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Paul Dyok requesting p~rmit to sell lunohes on .premises of Byron Jackson Co. at 2301 E. Vernon Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta.. that the communica- tion be filed and referred to thePolioe Department for report. Motion carried. Communication from Industrial Lunch Service requesting permit to sell lunches on premises of Duoommun Metals & Supply Co., at 4890 Alameda Street, letter from DuceInmun attached, was read. It was moved by Levy, seoonded by Peralta that the oommunioa- tion be filed and referred to the Police Department and City Attorney. Motion carried. Communi~ation from California Metal Enameling Co. requesting permit to operate a non-profit cafteria for their employees at 2151 E. 51st Street, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the oommunica- tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Cantlay & Tanzola, Inc., requesting curb painting at 2835 Sant'i Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica"'l" tion be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Report of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Street, Build- ing and Purchasing was read. It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Levy that the Report be filed. Motion carried. Report of Ca~l A. Heinze, Consutting Engineer, on operations of eleotrio system by Southern California Edison Co., for month of July, 1943, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy, that the report be received and filed. Motion carried. 2. j .~ 253 Communication from T. J. Furlong, City Clerk, requesting authority to employ Mrs. Agripina Lopez as ~ypist and clerk in the Water Denartment and City Clerk's Office at. salary of $140.00 per month, effective November 16, 1943, was read.. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the connnunica- tion be filed and the city clerk be authorized to empJ.,oy Mrs. Agripina Lopez as typist and Qlerk in the Water Deparmtne and ~ity Clerk's office at salary of ~140.00 per month. Motion oarried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the report be filed. Motion carried. Connnunications from Wilshire Oil Co. and Harvill Corpo~ation requesting permits to haul refuse from their premises along and upon the streets of the city of Vernon, were.read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Levy that the communioa- tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
