MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE C I'l'Y OF VERNON. HELD
ON JANUARY 4, 1944, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK PM
AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY
OF VERNON. CITY HALL, 4305 Santa ~e Avenue.
COUNCILMEN PRESENT: Messrs. Leonis, Levy, Peral ta and
Poxon
COUNCILMEN AE8ENT: Scheider
The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the minutes of
the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer requesting authority to
issue to W. A. Benjamine Electric Co. to do necessary electrical work
at pumping plant No.2 for the sum. of $987.80, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Levy that the communication be
filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer submitting deed from Central
Manufacturing District Inc., conveying 17 foot right-of-way lying within
city property at northwest corner of Fruitland Avenue and Downey Road,
was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be fi~d and the City Attorney be authorized, upon approval of deed,
to bring in a resolution at the next regular meeting accepting same.
Motion carried.
Petition from Norris,Stamping and Manufacturing 90. at al, requas1;.
ing improvement of portion of boyle Avenue between Leonis .blvd., and
Slauson Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Levy, sedonded by Poxon that the petition be
filed and referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.
Communication from E. R. Peterson requesting permit to conduct
service station at 4922 So. Soto Street, was read.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Los Angeles-ByProducts Co. requesting license
and permit to conduct a public dump mown as Metropolitan Dump located
at 37th and Alameda Streets, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion~ filed and referred to the Police Department for report. Motion
carried.
Report of the Union Oil Company on Los Angeles County Franchise
596NS for period ending December 31, 1943, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the report be
be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Stre~t, Building
and purchasing was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Levy that the report be ap-
proved and filed. Motion carried.

Communications from the following firms, requesting permits to
haul refuse from their premises upon and along the streets of the City of
Vernon, were read: Percival Steel & Supply Co. Armored Trunk Manufacturing
Co. and Sears Roebuck & Co.
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communications
be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Communication from L. A. County Civilian Defense Organization re-
g.rding meeting of Water Works Advisory Board held October 14,1943, was read.
It was moved byPoxon, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and referred to the City Attorney and City Engineer. Motion carried
Communication from Conveyor Company,Inc. requestint curb painting-
at 3260 E. Slauson Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the communication
be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Plant Rubber & Asbestos Works requesting curb
painting at 2120 E. 25th ~treet, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the communication-

tion filed December 21f 1943 regarding handling of salvage materials from
Los Angeles Municipal ncinerator at 2640 E. 26th street, was read. .
It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and the matter taken under advisement. Motion carried.
Communication from Studebaker Pacific Corporation, requesting Ii
permit to be issued to E. A. Smith of the A-I Catering Company fDr the oper-
ation of a cafteria at 4530 Loma Vista Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed and permit denied. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Levy,seconded by Poxon that the report be filed.
Motion carried.
Communication from A-I Catering Service requesting a permit to
distribute food to the Studebaker Company at 4530 Loma Vista Ave. was read.
It was moved by Levy,seconded by Poxon that the communication be
filed and the matter laid over until the next meeting. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1237, a resolution declaring the office of Council
man Herman Seheider vacant, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No.
1237 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1238, a Resolution appointing 6has. W. Trowbridge
as Councilman in the place and stead of Herman Scheider, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that ReSOlution No.
1238 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION no. 1239, a Resolution accepting deed from Central
Manufacturing District, Inc. was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No.
1239 be adopted. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE No. 567, an Ordinance declaring the City's intention to
close up and vacate and abandon a portion of E. 26th Street, was read for
second reading.

It was moved by Levy, seconded by Peralta that the applications
be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
