MINUTES OF TEE REGULAR MEETING OF TEE
CITY COUNCIL OF TEE CITY OF VERNON~ HELD
ON FEBRUARY 1, 1944, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK P.M.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that the minutes
of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer requesting authority to
employ Ralph Bazurto on a temporary basis as needed for construction work
in the Street and Water Departments, at the rate of $8.00 per day, was read.
It was moved by Poxon,' seconded by Trowbridge that the communica-
tion be filed and the City Engineer be ~uthorized to employ Ralph Bazurto
on a tem~orary basis as needed in the Street and Water Departments, at the
rate of i8.00 per day. Motion carried.
Communication from Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors togeth-
er with Resolution appropriating $18,892.00 from Motor Vehicle Fund for
the improvement of Washington Blvd., within the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Report of Southern California Gas Co" on Los Angeles County
Franchise No. 467 for period ending December 31, 1943, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Southern California Gas Co., on Los Angeles
County Franchise No. 463 for periOd ending December 31, 1943, togehter\
with check in the sum of .06 cents, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the report be
filed and referred to the Finance Committee. Motion carried.

Communication from the Fire Chief regarding installation of
underground fuel oil tahk by Coast Packing Co. 3275 E. Vernon avenue, was
read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication by an anonymous writer regarding the employing of
aliens on street adjacent to Huntington Park, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the communica-
tion be filed without reading. Motion carried.
Communication from Piaeer Flintkote Co. requesting permissi&n
to conduct ballistic tests on arm.or plating now being manufactured by them
for the account of U. S. Maritime Commission was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the commu-
nication be filed and permit given subject to the approval of the Consult-
int Electrical Engineer. Motion canried.

Communication from C. & B. Processing Co. requesting permit to
conduct a curing and smoking of meats at 3461 E. Vernon Ave, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu-
nication be filed and permit grated. Motion carried.
Communication from Ames Oil Equipment ~o. requesting permit to
conduct a business of fabrication and maintenance of oil and refinery appa-
ratus and equipment at 2301 E. 37th Street, wae read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from X-Ray Engineering Co. requesting :r;e rmit'
to conduct a business of inspection and x-ray of metals, castings and
plastics at 2410 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the commUnication
be filed and permit granted. Motion" carried.
Communication from Mel Johnson Co. to conduct a welding and
cutting business at 4724 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the communi-
cation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Commugication from War Department, Army ,tl'orces in regard to'
application of tudebaker Pacific Corp.amd A-I Catering Co. to supply
meals at 4530 Loma Vieta Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted sub-ject to the approval of application
by Studebaker Corporation. Motion carried.
Communication from Mobil-Meal System Industrial Feeding,request-
ing permit to operate a food canteen at Avion Aircraft Co. 4545 E. 50th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted subject to the approval of the Police
Department. Motion carried.

It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge, that the ~eport
be approved and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Electric Steel Foundry Co., regarding Curb
painting at 2700 S. Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the communi-
cation be filed and referred to the Police Depart~ent. Motion carried. -
Communication from Lane-Wells Co., regarding curb painting at
5610 S. Soto Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the communi-
cation be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Production Pattern & Mfg. Co. requesting
curb painting at 3165 E. Slauson Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica.
tion be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from SFudebaker Pacific Corp. regarding traffic
congestion at 4530 Loma Vista Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communi-
cation be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.

It was moved by Poxon, seoonded by Trowbridge that the report be
filed. Motion oarried.
Communications from the followin~ firms for permits to haul refuse
upon and along the streets of the City of ernon,were read: New York Corpora-
tion,Safeway Stores, Associated Oil Co. Vernon Kilns and Quality Meat Pack.Co.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seoonded by Peralta that the communioa-
tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Communioation from League of California Cities with circular letter
attached regarding allocation of funds appprtioned by State of California for
post-war planning, with reference to changing this allocation and makint it more
equitable for the unincorporated area and the cit~es, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communication
be filed. Motion carried.
Communl,oation from Carl A.. Heinze, Consulting Engineer." on applica-
tion by Pioneer blintkote Company for permission to operate a ballastic test-
ing device for the purpose of testing armor plating at their plant located at
5500 So. Alameda Street, with the recommendat ion that the firing Chamber be
located in a pit sufficiently deep to place the complete operation of firing
below the surface of the surrounding ground,was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the oommunication
be filed. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 568, an Ordinance ordering that a certain portion of
East 26th Street be vacated, was read for first reading.
It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Poxon that Ordinance No. 568
be passed for first reading. Motion carried.
