MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON~ HELD
ON FEBRUARY 15, 1944, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK PM
AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY

The meeting was called to order by Mayor J, B. Leonis.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge, that the
minutes of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer, recommending acceptance
of pipe fittings under contract of September 25, 1943 from Howard Supply
Company, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer, together with deed exe-
cuted by City or Los Angeles and Department of Water and Power conveying
a road easement across right-Of-Way. f or location of Washin~ton Boulevard.
together with check from the County Auditor in the sum of '1047 for par-
tial County aid toward acquisition of right-of-way for improvement of
WaShington Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu-
nication be filed and the check accepted. Motion carried.
, Communication from City Engineer requesting authority to employ
Pablo A. Martinez as skilled laborer and truck driver in Street and Water
Department at the rate of $6.00 per day, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the communica-
tion be filed and pequest granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Southern Pacific Company requesting permit
to install a Diesel refueling station at Butte Street Freight Yard near
25th and Alameda Streets, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the communication
be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Swift and Company ~egarding the drilling of a
deep well on their premises at 2691 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the communica-
tion be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Axelson Manufacturing Company regarding the_
locating of a street light at intersection of Randdph Street and Boyle'
Avenue, was read.
It was m<';}ved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu--
nication be filed .and referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried.':"
Communication from Ve~non Industrial Development Association sub-
mitting a check in the sum of $1,350.00 to cover civilian defense expense
of A. W. Phillips from January 1st to June 30th, 1944. was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communication
be filed and the check accepted. Motion carried.

Communication from Altadena Citizens Association regarding a
proposed park which is now the Altadena Golf Club, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the communi-
cation be filed. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1241, a Resolution protesting the purchase by Los
Angeles County of the Altadena Golf Club, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that Resolution No. 1241
be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1242, a Resolution authorizing payment of $1047.00
to the City of Los Angeles to secure road deed for the City of Vernon, was
read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded byPoxon that Resolution No. 1242
be adopted. Motion carried.
Communication from Sok Waxler requesting permit to conduct a busi-
ness of pickling and smoking meats at 3207 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the communication
be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. .
Communication from L. H. Pembroke Co. requesting permit to conduct
a business of manufa~ring and repairing of construction tools at 3636 So.
Alameda Street under the name of Construction Tool and Threading Co. was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Studebaker ~acific Corp., requesting permit to
operate a cafeteria at 4530 Loma Vista Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communication be
filed and. permit granted. Motion carried.
The Report of the Committee on Light, Power, Water, Street, Building
and Purchasing was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the Report be filed.
Motion carried.
Communication from Plant Rubber & Asbestos Works requesting loading
zone in fron of office located at 2120 E. 25th Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Tro~bridge that the communication
be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from ~lectric Steel Foundry Co., requesting curb paint-
ing in East 27th Street, east of Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication
be filed and refered to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Pioneer Flintkote Co., requesting a pedestrian
crossing at 2051 East 55th Street, was read.
It was ~oved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication
be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms for Permits to haul refuse
from their premises along and upon the streets of the ity of Vernon, were
read: Vitrefrax Corp. 5050 Pacific olvd., Acme Brewing Co. 2080 E. 49th Str.,
Luer Packing Co. 3026 E Vernon Ave. and Gilmore Oil Co. 2483 E. 28th St.

Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the report be filed.
Motion carried.
Report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer oBoperation of electric
system by Southern California Edison Co. for month of ecember, 1943, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge,seconded by ~oxon that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 568, an Ordinance orderIng that a certain portion of
East 26th Street, be vacated, was read for second reading.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that Ordinance No. 568
be passed for second reading. Motion carried.
ORDINANCE NO. 568, an Ordinance ordering that a certain portion of
East 26th Street, be vacated, was read for third and final reading.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that Ordinance No. 568
