19440502 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTE5 OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD ON MAY 2nd, 1944, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK P. M. AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY HALL, 4305 SANFA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA. COUNCILMEN ABSENT: Messrs. Leonis, Peralta, Poxon, Trowbridge and Maillard None COUNCILMEN PRE5ENT: The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. It was moved by poxon, seconded by Peralta that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer, together with lease a- 8reement signed by Peter Stratt~s, for use of portion of Water Depart- ment property at Fruitland and ~owney Road for farming purposes, was read. It was moved by poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed. Motion carried. Communication from J. B. Leonis, Inc., requesting permission to relocate spur track crossing in Soto Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the com- munication be filed and permission granted. Motion carried. Communication from General Petroleum Gorp. regard1ng the dis- mantling and relooation of power pole transmission line on ;he sou.th side of ~st 37th Street between Santa Fe Right-of-way and Soto Stree&8S was read. It was moved by Peralta, seoonded by Trowbridge, that the com- munication be referred to Carl A. Heintz, consulting engineer of the City of Vernon, aDd ta, Mayor, to contact the Edison Company. Motion carried. Communication from C. E. Lovell, 1427 W. 101st Street, Los Angeles, regarding the caving of Lots 16 and 17, Block +, Aldine Square Tract, due to adjoining pit, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the c om- munication be filed and referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried. Communication from Bruce A. Dorsey, Vernon Branch Post Office, submitting a request to rent municipal house at 4330 Furlong Place, when vacant, said house now being occupied by John W. Jackson, was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge, that the com- munication be filed. Motion carried. Communicat ion from Holmes &: Prior Welding Co. requesting. permit to conduct a welding business at 2124 E. 51st Street, was read. It was moved by Maillard, seConded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication be filed, Motion carried. . Communication from Benz Engineering Company req~esting permit to operate a warehouse and repair engines and pumps at 2113~. 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Maillard, seconded by Trowbridge, that the com- municazion be filed and permit granted. Moti~n carried. 1. 3:15 Communication from Studebaker Pacific Corporation requesting an inspection of cafeteria and canteen operated by ~-I Catering Company at 4530 Loma Vista Avenue, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the communica- tion be filed and referred to the Health Office. Motion carried. Communication from Los Angeles Police Department together with communication of C. E. Stubbs, 2520 West 79th Street, Inglewood, regard- ing traffic control at Vernon Avenue and Alameda Street and 41st Street and Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by Peralta, secondedby poxon, that the communication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from ~ane Wells Company requesting City to repair street adjacent to their driveway or grant themselves permit to do repairs was read. It was moved byTrowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the commu- nication be filed and referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. Communication fro~ Eas.en Co. requesting that green curbing be removed at 2335 E. 27th j;)treet, was read. It, was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the com- munication be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from Atlas Transfer, 2105 E. 25th Street, request- ing that curb across from their driveway be painted red so that long trucks can turn to and from their premises. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the com- munication be filed and referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from A. B. Castle &: Co. requesting permit to haul refuse from their premises along andupon the streets of the.City of Vernon, was read. It was moved by Maillard, seconded by Poxon that the communica- tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Report of the Committee, of Light, Power, Water, Street, Build~ ing and Purchasing was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the Report be filed. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was movecl by Poxon, seconded by Kaillard, that the report be filed. Motion carried. Communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, submit- ting Partial Release covering additions and ,betterments as of November 30 1943 executed by Harris Trust,&: Savings Bank and Security-First National Bank, Los Angeles, and original conveyance dated as of the 30th of November 1943 conveying all extensions etc.,made prior to and existing on November 30, 1943, executed by Southern California Edison Co. was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu- nication be filed and approved. Motion carried. RESOLUTION No. l252~ a Resolution approving committees of the City Council under appointment by the mayor, was read. 2. 31-6 It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No. l252 be adopted. Motion carried1 I Communication from ThomasV, Cassidy, City Attorney, on request of Los Angeles Railway Co. for a bus !loading zone at 57th and Santa Fe Avenue, said communication recommending that a temoDrary permit for the duration of the warbe issued to the ~os Angeles Railway Company, was read. i It was moved by Trowbridge~ seconded by Peralta, that the com- munication be filed and the recommendation concurred in.
