Communication from the Llepartment of Finance~ State of California,
enclosing form of application and.agreement fO.r the allocation of funds
for civilian defense control telephone and communication service for the

Communication from County of Los Angeles enclosing cOl'reeted copy
of resolution adopted by the Board of SJlP-ervisors on May 2, 1944, declaring
a portion of Washington Boulevard in ~he City of Vernon no longer a part or the.
County system of highwa~s, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the communle.~
tion be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Board of Po~ice Commissioners, City of Los Ange-
les, enclosing report of R. T. Dorsey, Traffic Engineer, regarding school
child protection at Alameda Street and Vernon Avenue, was read.

Communica tion from Chema terial Company, Ltd., requesting peNtt
to operate the business of warehousing packaged chemical products at 2124
East 51st S~reet, was read.

cation be filed and referred to the City Clerk. Motion carried.
Communication from Fred W. Austin requesting permit to operate
printing business at 2030 East 52nd Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Harman Packing Co., requesting permit to haul
refuse from premises at 3305 E. Vernon Avenue/ along and upon the streets
of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seeonded by Peralta that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from William Radkov~ch Company requesting permit to
haul refuse from Government housing project at Santa Barbara and Alameda
Street across railroad tracks to the dump at 41st and Alameda Street, ~as read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit denied. Motion carried.
Communication from Atlas Transfer regarding establishment of red
zone on East 25th Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Maillard, that ,the communi-
cation be filed and the matter referred. to the Police Deprtment. Motion
carried.

Communication from the-City ~gineer regarding application from
Gilmore Oil Co., for excavation permit, the Engineer recommending that tbe
Gilmore Oil Co., be required to obtain franchise before permit is granted,
was read.,

Report of C. A. HeinZf),Consulting Engineer, on operation of elec-
tric System by Southern California EdisonCompany, Ltd. for the month of
March, 1944, was read.
It was moved by Maillard, seconded by Trowbridge that the report
be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Purchas-
ing and Library was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta that the report be filed.
Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
Letter from American Legion Post /1338 for permission to sell poppie's
two days during May, was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the matter be
referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried.
Bids for old copper amounting to 1100 pounds have been received
from the following firms:

A-Brass Foundry, who bid $6.00 per 100 pounds
Berg Metals Corporation, who bid $6.40 per 100 pounds
Jos. Levin & Sons who bid $7.00 per 100 pounds
Jos. Levin & Sons being the highest and best bidder paid $7.00
per 100 pounds.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the copper
ba sold to Jos. Levin & Sons. Motion carried.
Communication from California Walnut Growers Association,
enclosing sketch of proposed temporary housing project, application for
permit referred to Committee or Whole on Kay 2nd, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
The following applications, all having the approval of the City
Engineer, were read:
APPLICATION 10004 So. Calif. Edison Co. to replace 5 poles on Leonis Blvd.,
between Soto Street and Downey Road.
APPLICATION 10005 So. Calif. Water Co. to repair water main at 2030 E. 45th
St.
APPLICATION 10006 So. Calif.' Water ao. to repair water main at 2048 E. 52nd St.
APPLICATION 10007 So. Calf. Telephone Co. to place one pole and remove one pole
on E/S Boyle Ave. 87' 5/0 Slauson Ave.
APPLICATION 10008 So. Calif. Telephone Co. to place power duct on E/S Boyle
Ave . 23t' and 87' 5/0 Slauson Ave.,
APPLICATION ~0009 Simpson Steel Co. to connect to sewer at 2065 E. 51st St.
APPLICATION 10010 So. Calif. Water Co. to repair water main at 1~15 E. 25th St.
APPLICATION 10011 So. Calif. Gas Co. to recondition gas main on E/S Santa Ye
Ave. from NPL of 52nd St. to SPL of 54th St., also N/S
53rd st., from 16'w/E to 5.5' E/E of Santa Fe, also N/S
54th St. from 16' W/E to 3' E/O Santa Fe Ave.
APPLICATION 10012 So. Calif. Edison Co. to install one pole and anchor on
Slauson Ave. S/S 205' E/O Alcoa Ave.
APPLICATION 10013 So. Calif. Edison Co. to install one pole and remove two
poles N/S and trench one pole 5/0 Vernon Ave.
APPLICATION 10014 West Disinfecting Co. to construct cement concrete drive-
way apron and depressed curb on E. 37th St. 170' S/S to 182.50
feet E/S Ross Street.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Maillard, that the applications
be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.

It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the
members of the Departments of the City be instructed to submit their vaca-
tion schedules to the City Council for approval, and the C.ity Clerk be
authorized to notify all members of the Departments of the Council's request.
Motion carried.
