MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY
C OUNC IL OF THE CITY OF VERN ON. HELD ON J1JLY
5th, 1944, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK P. M. AT THE
OFFIC E OF THE CITY COUNCIL, CITY HALL, 4305
SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA

The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon that the Mdnates of
the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Report of F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief, on application of Penberthy
Lumber Co., to construct buildings on Soto Street, between 50th Street and
Leonie Blvd.;;(Fire Chief recommending that a 60 foot street on the east side
of Penberthy property be opened and a 10 inch water line, complete with two
4-way fire h7drants to adequately take care of this property in case of fire)
was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communica-
tion be filed and the matter be laid over until the next ~ea1ng. Motion
carried.
CommuniCation from Gordon B. Kaufman Associates, Architects and
Engineers, regarding application of Penberthy Lumber Co., for construction
of Hardwood Lumber Yard on Soto Street between 50th Street and. Leonis
Blvd., was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communica-
tion be filed and the matter laid over until the next meeting. Motion carried.
Communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer. together
with check from Southern California Edison Company in tl:.B sum of $50,009.28
representing 2% of the gross receipts for period ending May 29,1944, was read.
It was moved b1 Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communication
be filed and the check accepted. Motion carried.
Communication from Elmer W. Huls requesting leave of absence as
City Fireman effective June 25, 1944 due to induction into the armed services
was read.

It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communication
be filed and request granted. Motion canied.
Communication from Southepn Pacific Co~pany requesting permission
to operate a mobile fueling unit to serve Diesel lectric switch engines ad-
jacent to 25th Street and Alameda Blvd. was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that the communication
be filed and the request denied. Motion carried.
Communication from Wells truckways Ltd~-A~ requesting permission to
install a 1000 ,gallon underground tank to be used for the purpose of storing
used crank case motor oil, pending its disposal, at 3139 East 26th Street
was read. '
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communication
be filed and the matter referred to the Fire Chief. Motion carried.
Communications from the following firms requesting ~rmits to haul
refuse from their premises along and upon the streets of the City of Vernon
were read: '

Norris Stamping Co., Lord & Babcock, Levine Cooperage, Weyler Transportation
Company, Blair Beverage Co., Howard Supply Co. and Allis-Chalmers Manufactur-
ing Co.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that the communca-
tions be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Wells Truckways, Ltd., requesting permit to
operate a general trucking business at 3139 E. 26th street, also to haul refuse
from their premises along and upon the Streets of the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the report be
filed. Motion carried.
Communication 'from Ramon Alvarez requesting permit to put roof
on barn and repair house at corner of Leonis Blvd. and 50to Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Pur-
chasing and Library, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the report
be filed. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. te55, a Resolution approving memorandum of Agree-
ment for accumulation. of 1/4stgas tax allocated for Streets of Major impor-
tance and for state Highways, was read.
It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Poxon, thatResolution No.
1055 be adopted. Motion carried.
