19441017 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes ) MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETINIJ OF THE CITY C OUNC IL OF THE CITY OF VERN ON HELD ON OCTOBER 17,1944 at 3:00 O'CLOCK P.M. AT THE OFFIOE OF ~ THE CITY C OUNC IL, 4305 SANTA FE A VENBE, VERNON COUNCILMEN PRESENT - MESSRS. Trowbridge, Leonis and Peralta COUNCILMEN ABSENT - MESSRS. Poxon and Mailliare. The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried. Communic~tion from the City Engineer, togethe~ with copies of letters from Army ~ervice Forces, Ninth Service Command Headquarters ad- vising that the Vernon Water Department has been deleted from the Master Inspection Responsibility List and that the maintenance of guards at pumping stations are no longer necessary; also request of the City En- gineer for authority to a dvise guards that their services will not be required after October 31, 1944, were read. It was moved by Trowb~idge, seconded by Peralta that the co~- nication be filed and the City ~ngineer requested to notify guards that services will cease as of October 31, 1944. Motion carried. Communication from the Fire Chief submitting report on build- ing application of Filtrol Company for construction of building to be used for experimental purposes, was read. (The Fire Department has been informed that materials to be used for experiments will consist of mostly clay, water and supluric acid, and no flammable liquids will be used, and the Fire Chief recommends t~t .the permit be granted.) It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the commu- nication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from hero ~ie and Stamping Company, requesting per- mit for the operation of a die and-stamping business (Similar to Norris Stamping Co.) on property east of Moore Machinery Co.-and west of ~terling Meat Company_on the north side of Vernon Avenue, plot of property being at- taChed, was read. Communication from Associated Steel Fabricators requesting per- mit to conduct a steel fabric~ting business at 5200 Alcoa Ave. was read.. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication be filed and permit grated. Motion carried. Communication from Los Angeles Police Department Traffic Engineer, stating they have received a telephonic request from Fire Chief Parker, Consolidated Yards, Naywood for some warning sign of a bad dip in the road- way of Washington Blvd. several blocks east of Grande Vista Avenue, was read It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the commu- nication be referred to the City Engineer. Motion carried. Communication from Johns-Manville requesting curb painting at 3275 E. Slauson Ave., was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the Commu- nication be referred to the Police Department. Castle Co. requesting curb painting at 2200 E. 55ht Street, was read. It ~as moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the commu- nication be referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. - Communications from the following firms requesting permits to haul refuse from their premises along and upon the streets of the City of Vernon, were read: Weisstein Bros. & Survol, Saval Company, Swift & Co. Kennedy Name Plate Company, United Aircraft Products Inc. and Chas. E. Hires Co. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu- nications be filed and permits granted. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Peralta, seconded by Trowbridge that the report be filed. Motion carried. Report of Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer,on operations of eledtric system by Southern California Edison Co. for month of August, 1944, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the report be received and filed. Motion carried. Report of the Committea on Street Maintenance, Building and Pur- chasing,and Library,was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the report be filed. Motion carried. Mr. J. G. Brown of the Rainbo Recording Co. appeared before the City Council regarding business application filed w~th the Council on Oct- ober 3, 1944; after discussions on the matter it was referred to F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief, for a report, upon motion by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta. Motion carried. The following applications, all having the approval of the City Engineer, were read: APPLICATION 10235 - Axelson Manufacturing Co. to construct sidewalk in E/s Boyle Avenue 55 ft. to 430 ft. Nlo Randolph Street. APPLICATION 10236 - Southern California Gas Co. to repair main in Nls Ver- non Ave. 257 ft. E/o Hawthorne ~ve_ APPLICATION 10237 - Quality Packing Co. to.i~ construct grease and sand trip and make storm drain connection at 3207 East Vernon Ave. APPLICATION 10238 - Clougherty Bros. to pave shoulder area in Nls Vernon Avenue from- Soto Street to 268 ft. east thereof. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the appli- cations be filed and permits granted. Motion carried.
