19450102 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTFS OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TEE CITY OF VERNON, HELD ON JANUARY 2, 1945, AT 3:00 O'CLOCK P.M. AT THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, 4305 SANTA :F'E AVENUE, VERNON, CALIFORNIA C OUNC ILMEN PRPSENT: C OUNC ILMEN ABSENT: Leonis, Poxon, Trowbridge, Peralta Mailliard The meeting was called to order by Mayor J. B. Leonis. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the minutes of the previousmeeting be approved. Motion carried. Communication and resolution from Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County declaring a portion of Downey Road no longer a part of County system of Highways, was read. It was moved by poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communi- cation be filed. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer on request of Central Manu- facturing District, Inc. requesting Water Department to reset pressure reg- ulator at their meter to allow 100 pounds pre!"sure into their distributing system, together with the report of the City ~gineer that their letter states they will ass~e all responsibility on account of increased pressure but is doubtful if this would relieve the City of any responsibility, wa. read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta that the communi- vation be filed. Motion carried. Accept~nce by Los Angeies Rail..y Company of hailway franchise No. 576 ad9pted December 5, 1944, was read. It waamoved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that the acceptance be filed. Motion carried. .. Communication from Thomas V. Cassidy, City Attorney, on bid of Nellie -lvarez for the picking up, hauling and dumping of street refuse, with the City Attorney's report that~is matter cannot be handled in this way, as no employee of the city can have an employee of t~r own handle their work and that the request would have to be denied as illegal, was read It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon, that the communica- tion be filed and request denied. Motion carried. Communication from California Crating and Exportins Co. requesting a license to conduct a business of boxing,_crating, rust proofing, wrapping and shipping for export at 2241 East 38th btreet, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by ~oxon, that the communica- tion be filed and the matter referred to the Fire Department. Motion carri4 Communication from Consolidated Distributing Company, requesting permit to manufacture mayonnaise .nd salad dressing, candied popcorn and raisinette jam at 2344 East 38th ~treet, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by poxon, that the communi- cation be filed and permit granted. Communication from Western Pressure ContrOl, 5700 Santa Ii'e Ave. regarding water drainage at 57th Street and Santa Fe Avenue, was read. 1. Young Spring & Wire Co. requesting a pedestrian crossing on Slauson Avenue west ofj&lcoa Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Peralta, that the commu- nication be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Report of General Petroleum Corporation on franchise ordinanoes 80, 152, 299 and 532 for period ending Ootober 31, 1944 together with a oheck in the amount of $72.98, was read. It was moved-by Trowbridge, seoonded by Poxon, that the report be referred to the City Clerk for checking. Motion carried. RESOLUTION No. 1263, a re~olution fixing compensation of the Fire Department as of January, 1945, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that Resolution no. 1263 be adopted. Motion oarried. Report of the Police Department was read. It wafJ moved by Poxon, seconded by Peralta, that the report be filed. Motion carried. Communioation from Nellie Alvarez setting forth the various streets and schedule of cleaning under bid submit~ed December 13,1944, was read.
