The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the
minutes of the previous meet~g be approved. Motion carried.
Communication and report of Francis Bates, City Engineer, on
request of Western Molded Products for permission to lay telephone cable
conduit underground and across East 26th St. to connect switch-baord in
Stauffer Chemical Company general offices with division plants; Pacific
Hard Rubber Company and Western Molded Products, Inc., was read The
City Engineer reports that in order to avoid divided responsibility in
case of trouble, that such cross~gs should be granted only to respon-
sible parties hold~g franchise rights in the street, and recommends
that the request be denied.
It was moved by Anderston, seconded by Trowbridge, that the
communication be filed and request denied. Motion carried.
Communication and report of Fr~cis Bates, City Enginner, on re-
quest of Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel orp. for permission to have their
general contRactors, Bechtel Corp. complete. 8 inch water service connection
to their 8 inch fire line at Slauson Avenue and Downey Road, was read.
The City eng~eer reports that the City operates and mainta~s a first-class
high pressure system of street mains and that any outsider should not be
allowed to work on it without minute and constant supervision by the City,
and that the City will be able to start this work with city forces within
a reasonable time, and no later than when it would be possible to provide
the necessary superviosion, and therefore recommends that the request
be deniLed.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and request denied. Motion carried.
Communication and resolution from the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors declaring Boyle Avenue within the City to be a part of the
County system of highways, and requesting consent of the City to its
improvement by the County, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication and resolution be filed, and the City Attorney draw a resolution
conforming to the request. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1379, A resolution of the City Council of the City
of Vernon consenting to and approving the action of the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Los Angeles, in adopting a resolution declaring Boyle Avenue
from Slauson Avenue to Leonis Boulevard in the City of Vernonl a portion of
the County System of Highways of said Los Angeles County, to be im~roved with
construction of cement concrete curbs, gutters, walk, dirveways, 7 asphal-
tic concrete pavement and drainage structures as set forth in said
resolution, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that Resolution
No. 1379 be adopted. Motion carried.

Communication rrom the State Controller submitting estimated
apportionments of Gasoline tax amd Motor Vehicle License Fees (In Lieu"
~ax) for fiscal year ending June 30, 1949, was read. Estimated Motor
Vehicle license fees $2459.00 and Gasoline taxes $2323.00.
It was moved by ~rowbridge, seconded by 'Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Claim or John H. Cutting ror damages to automobile by Street
Department truck in the amount of $438.97, was read.
. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu'"
nication be filed and thec1a~ denied. Motion carried.
Communication rrom County of Los Angeles Couty Road Department
regarding parking conditions on Santa Fe Jl.venue, north of Slauson Avenue
due to the loading and unloading or passengers rrom street cars, was
read. Recommends No Parking from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM.
It was moved by ~rowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department with
power to act. Motion carried.
Communication from L. A. Young Spring & Wire Corp. requesting a
crosswalk across Slauson Avenue at 3200 E. Slauson Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by ~rowbridge, that the commu-
nicat.ion be filed and the matter referred to Police Department. Motion
carried.
Report or Police Department on request or Acme Salvage & Sprpl~s
Company for permit to conduct business at 2031 E. 46th Street, was read.
The Police Department recommends that permit be granted.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by ~rowbridge, that the report
be filed and perm! t granted. Motion ca.rried.
Communication rrom McCarty ~rucking Company requesting a permit to
operate a trucking business at 2440 E. 26th Street, was read.
It was moved by ~rowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed B.nd permit granted. Motion ca.rried.
Cpmmunication from Kirsch Company requesting permit to conduct a
wholesale drapery hardware business at 4720 District Blvd. was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication rrom Contractors Machinery Co. requesting a permit
to operate a construction equipment broker business at 5212 Santa Fe Avenue
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion cartied.
Communication from Arabol Mfg. Co. requestion permit to conduct a
business or making adhesives for labeling at 2252 E. 38th Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communi-
cation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from H. R. Johnson and William Schultz, requesting a
permit to buy scrap iron and metals from various industrial plants within
the city, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-

Communication from G. A. Anderson, Deputy City Clerk, requesting
vacation leave beginning June 12th, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and request granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Walter E. Ross, Deputy City Clerk, requesting
vacation leave starting May loth, was r~ad.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and request granted. Motion carried.
Communication from American Legion, Vernon Post No. 338, requesting
permission to sell poppies on May 21st, 1948, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, secoKed by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Pacific Coast International Association of Law
Enforcement Officials in regard to 1948 convention to be held at Vancouver,
B. C. from June 29th to July 2nd, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was read.
It was moved by Anderson, secoDbd by mrowbridge, that the report
be filed and approved. Motion carried.
Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Purchas-
ing and Library, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the report
be approved and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the Fire Chief requesting the City Council
to advertise for bids for the purchase of one-half ton panel truck, was
read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by TDowbridge, that the
communication be filed. Motion carried.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the
City Clerk be authorized to advertise for bids for the purchase of one
one-half ton panel truck, as requested by the Fire Chief. Motion carried.
Communication from the Vernon Industrial Development Association endosing
partial release, etc., from Eidson Company, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the commu-
nication be filed and referred to the Electrical Engineer for checking and
report. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1380, a Resolution of the City Council of the City
of Vernon approving the appointment of Committees made by the Mayor on
April 20th, 1948 was read.
~t was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that Resolution
No. 1380 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1381, a Resolution of the City Council appointing
the firm of Haskins and Sells, Certified Public accountants, as the auditors
for the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that Resolution
No. 1381 be adopted. Motion carried.
