The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the minutes
of the previous meeting be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer together with letter from
H. G. Erickson, Chief Engineer for the Central Manufacturing District, in
regards to prospoed building permit for Westinghouse Building at 46th & Soto
Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that the com-
munication be filed and the matter referred to the Building Engineer.
Motion carried.
Notice of hearing before the Public Utilities Commission on appli~
cation of Los Angeles Transit Lines for aut~ority to adjust and increase
far~s through the elimination of token fares and the $1.50 weekly pass,
was read. Hearing to be on September I, 1948 at lOjOO o'clock A. M. in the
Commission Court room, State Building, Los Angeles.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trpwbridge, that the
notice be filed. Motion carried.
Communication and notice by the Los Angeles County Board of
Supervisors of a hearing on revocation of the suspended paermit of the
City of Vernon, California Container Corp. and Flintkote Company for the
discharge of industrial waste into the Hooper Avenue Drainage system on
August 17, 1948, at 11:000 o'clock AM in Room 501 Hall of Records, Los
Angeles, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded b,yMailliard, that the communication
be filed and the matter referred to the City Engineer, City Attorney and E.
R. Young, Special Counsel. Motion carried.
Communication and report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer,
on letter of transmittal from Southern California Edison Co. together with
their check in the amount of $201,797.50 for Bond and Interest retirements
due October 1st and April 1st on Light and Power Bonds, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication and report be filed and check accepted. Motion carried.
Communication from Baldridge Packing Company together with their
check in the amount of $568.75 as their portion of cost in cleaning sewer
in E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Leonis that the communication
be filed and check accepted. Motion carried. '
Communication from Mechanical Foundries Division of Food Machinery
Corporation requesting permission to install a new 3611 cupola to meet the Air
Pollution Control, Districts standards at 4545 Pacific Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted subject to approval of request by City Attor-
ney. Motion carried.

Communica~ion from Firebaugh Motors, Inc. requesting a permit
for the sale of Fireb~ugh trucks at 2665 Leonis Blvd.,Wws read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and matter referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.

Communication from A. A. Chastek for permit to operaltte a furniture
and cabinet shop at ,2050 E. 52nd Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the
communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Jaffee Mfg. Co. requesting permit for the
manufature of aprons and kindred items at 2344 E. 38th Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Shaylow Steel Products Co. requesting a permit
for the sale of wheelbarrows at 4441 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by'Leonis, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Harry Ditlove dba Vanlin Meat Co. requesting a
permit to conduct a wholesale meat business at 3305 E. Vernon Ave. was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communi-
cation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Earl F. Snowden requesting a permit to buy and
sell horses for various packers at 4336 Alcoa Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit denied, and the matter referred to the City Attorney.
Motion carried.
Communication from Compressed Gas Cylinder, Inc., requesting the
rescinding of Ordinance prohibiting no-parking on East 54th Street, was read.
It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department for report.
Motion carried.

Communication from Waukesha Motor Co. requesting curb painting at
4927 Pacific Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that the commu-
nication be filed and matter referred to Police Depart~ent. Motion carried.
Communication and report forms submitted by the Office of State
Controller in regard to annual report to be filed under the Collier-Burns
Highway Act of 1947, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the com-
munication be filedd Motion carried.

RESOLUTION NO. 1396, a Resolution appointing the City Clerk as the
Officer of the City to make and file the annual reports with the office of the
State Controller as required by the Collier-Burns Highway Act of 1947, was read.
It wa~ moved by Trowbridge, seconded by l~derson, that the Resolu-
tion No. 1396 be adopted. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer, recommending acceptance of
sewer in Leonis Blvd. constructed by Chorak Construction Co. and payment
for $3218.04, was read.

It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and recommendation concurred in. Motion carried.

It was moved by Trowbridge, seonnded by Hailliard, that the report
be filed. Motion carried.
Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Purchas-
ing and Library was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the report
be filed. Motion carried.
ORDIANCE NO. 616, an Ordinance of the City of Vernon authorizing a
contract between the City Council of the City of Vernon and the Board of
Administration, California State Employees. Retirement System, making its
employees memebers of said system, was presented for second and third reading.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Mailliard, that Ordinance No.
616 be ~aid over until the next regular meeting on August 17, 1948. Motion
carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 1394, a Resolution fixing compensation for certain
employees of the City of Vernon as of July 1, 1948, was read.
It was moved by TrOWbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that Resolution
No. 1394 be adopted. Motion carried.
RESOLUTION No. 1395, a Resolution establishing the prevailing rate
per diem wages for improvement of Fruitland Avenue and Hampton street,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that Resolution
No. 1395 be adopted. Motion carried. '
