The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Leonis, that the minutes of
the previous meeting be approved and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engneer in regard to encroachment
on Ross Street by E. J. Stanton & Sons, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
- tion be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer reporting that Fire Hydrant
on north side of Vernon Avenue, 1500 feet west of Santa Fe Avenue was dam-
aged on August 1, 1948 by W. P. Moore, 2830 E. 2nd Street, Los Angeles,
was read. The City Engineer recommends that the owner and driver of auto-
monile be billed in the amount of $305.17 for repairs.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and recommendation of the City Engineer concurred in.
Motion carried.
Communication from Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Enginaer, submitting
an extension of an agreement original1y entered into"between the City of
Vernon and Union Pacific Co. in 1933 for execution by the City of Vernon,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and that the Mayor and the City Clerk be instructed to
sign the extension agreement. Motion carried.
Communication and report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer,
advising that Mr. Fred Hurley has examined the records of the Vernon District
office of the Southern California Edison Co. for period of May 30, 1947
to May 29, 1948 and reports they are in agreement with city records, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed. Motion carried.
Communication and report of L. C Husted, Battalion Chief, on re-
quest of H. L. rrudd Co. for permit to operate a warehouse at 3300 Leonis Blvd. ,
toghether with his recommendation that the permit be granted, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communi-
cation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from L. C. Husted, Battalion Chief, on request of
J. Hungerford Smith Co. for permit to operate a warehouse at 4721 E. 48th
Street, with his recommendation that permit be granted, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.

Communications from Safeway Stores, Inc.,Own Drug. Co.,Whelan
Drug Co., Sears,Roebuck & Co. and Interstate Bakeries, Corp. requesting
that private warehouse section of Ordinance No. 598 be amended, were read.
, It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nications be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from J. R. Molony Co. in regard to liability
insurance relative to persons living in cottages on city property in rear
of City HaIl, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and the matter laid over until the next regular meeting
of the City Council. Motion carried.
Communication from Bernard Epps & Co. requesting curb painting
at 2332 E. 38th Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from Victor Belting & Equipment Co. requesting curb
painting at 2316 East 38th Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the 'communica-
tion be filed and matter referred to the Police Department and Oity Engineer.
Motion carried.
Communication from Utility Steel Foundry Co. requesting curb
painting at 2320 East Slauson Avenue and the installation of traffic signals
at Alcoa and Slauson Avenues, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion ve filed and the matter referred to the Police Department and City
Engineer. Motion carried.
Communication from Bell & Johnson requesting permit to conduct a
business of selling truck and automobile parts and accessories at 4517
Produce Plaza, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Frye-Newmark Paper Co. requesting a permit to
conduct a warehouse and jobbing business of paper products and janitorial
supplies at 2525 Fruitland Avenue, vas read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Pacific Abrasive Supply Co., requesting permit to
conduct a warehouse and repairing sanding machine equipment at 5050 Pacific
Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Vesco Manufacturing Co. requesting permit for the
manufacture of garden and patio furniture and a line of tents and tarpaulins
and special canvas items at 2375 E. 27th Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carrie.

It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-

Communication from Bender Machine ~ Engine Co. requesting a permit
to operate a machine shop at 2059 E. 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from County Plant Protection requesting a permit to
operate a private patrol and watchman service, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from W. J. Farwell requesting permit and license to
operate cigarette vending machine at 4325 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and matter referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from Jimmie Walker requesting permit to sell lunches
within the city, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Leonis, that the communica-
tion be filed and the matter referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.

service station at 3267 E.Washington Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communica-

Communication from Earl E. Harryman requesting permit to operate a
service station at 2800 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from O. M. Newcombe requesting permissionto remove
personal toilet fixtures from Olympic house occupied by him, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from WaIter E. Ross, Deputy Clerk, ,requesting vaca-

Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Pur-
chasing and Library was read.

ORDINANCE NO. 616, an ordinance authorizing contract between the
City Council and the Board or Administration, Calirornia State Employees'
Retirement System, making its employees members or said system, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Leonis, that said matter
be laid over un~il the next regular meeting or the City Council. Motion
carried.
RESOLUTION NO. 1402, A resolution requesting the head or each
department to determine whether any city employee belongs to any organiza-
tion which advocates the overthrow or constitutional government by rorce,
was read.
It was moved by Trowb~idge, seconded by Anderson, that Resolution
No. 1402 be adopted. Motion carried.
Communication rrom and report or vernon Industrial Development
Association ror period ending June 30, 1948 was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu-
nication and report be riled. Motion carried.
Communication from the City Engineer approving proposed tract
map #14256 and aeccommending that it be approved, subject to the filing of
a bond in the amount or $107,000.00 '1 guaranteeing certain work referred to
in said communication, was read.
It was moved by Leonis, seconded by Anderson, that the communica-
tion be filed and recommendation concurred in. Motion carried.
