19490203 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes Minutes OF ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON, HELD ON FEBRUARY 3, 1949 AT 10:00 A. M. IN THE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON.. COUNCILMEN PRESENT: Furlong Trowbridge and Anderson COUNCILMEN ABSENT: Leonis and Mailliard The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong It was moved by Anderson, Seconded by Trowbridge, that the DItnutes of the previous meeting be approved and filed. Motion carried. Communication and report of the City Engineer on request of John Deer Killefer Company for tentative approval of Proposed Tract No. 15386, was read. The City Engineer recommends that tentative approval of Tract Map. No. 15386 be disapproved, with the suggestion that it be re-submitted after correcting to provide a dedication for public street purposes of the easterly 20 feet adjacent to existing Downey Road. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication and report be filed and the recommendation of the City Engineer concurred in. Motion carried. Communication and report from the City Engineer and T. V. Cassidy, City Attorney, for permit to construct a vertical furnace in the plant of General Metals Corp. at 5701 So. Boyle Avenue in place of the open cupola furnace now on their premises, was read. The City Engineer and City Attorney recommend that the permit be approved, as in their opinion the proposed new installation would tend to better conditions in this locality and the approval of the application would not be contrary to the City Zoning Ordinance. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication and report be filed and the recommendation of the City Engineer and City Attorney be concurred in. Motion carried. Communication from the City Engineer advising that notice has been received from the State Employees' Retirement System that mandatory retirement of Mr. Robert McClaim as laborer will become effective February 1st, and that Mr, Wm. L. Miller will become effective March 1st, was read. Mr. Miller being employed in the Water Pumping Plant. It was moved by Trowbirdge, seconded by Anderson that the commu- nication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from Mr. Wm. A. Smith, Chj.irman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, submitting first annual report of the Los Ange- les County Air Pollution Control District, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication be filed. Motion carried. Notice from State of California, Divison of Real Estate, of the filing of Tract No. 14256 was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the notice be filed. Motion carried. Communication from the City of Burbank together with a copy of their Resolution No. 5367, objecting to the adoption of the Rapid Transit Act unless amended to allow any city the right to determine the manner herein provided wheth- er it will be included in the proposed district, was read. 1. 21:3 ~ It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the communication be filed. Motion carried. Communication from G. B. Bean Drug Distributor, Inc. requesting a permit to conduct a shipping of pharmaceutical and proprietary packaged drug lines at 4609 Hampton Street, vas read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and permit granted, subject to approval of the Fi~e Chief. Motion carried. Communication from The Chartomatic Co. requesting a permit to engage in the sale of instrument auxilIaries at 2068 E. 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbri~ge, ~hat the commu- ncation be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Jimmy George requesting a permit to conduct a truck body shop at 2090 E. 25th Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Edward Jamison requesting a permit to operate a lunch truck within the City, was read. Letter from Wire & Steel Mfg. Co. and Los Angeles Steel Casting Co. was attached. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication be filed and permit granted, subject to the approval of the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from See Penny Company requesting curb painting at' 5700 So. Boyle Avenue, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and matter referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. , , Communication from Albert & Zola Mfg. Co. requesting curb painting at 2208 E. 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and matter referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communication from American Can ,Co. requesting repainting of cross walk on Santa Fe Avenue between 48th and 49th Streets, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and matter referred to the Police Department. Motion carried. Communications from the folloWing firms requestion permits to haul refuse from their respective premises, along and upon the streets of the City of Vernon were read: Safeway Stores, 1925 E. Veron Avenae, Vesting house Electric Supply Co. 4601 South Boyle Avenue, and Consolidated Metals Corp. 2619 Santa Fe Avenue. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nications be filed and permits granted. Pbtion carried. Communication from Grant Oil Tool Co. regarding improvements to be made on their property on East 4tth Street, was read. 2. 2i4 It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be f'iled and the matter ref'erred to the City Engineer, with power to act. Motion carried. Report of the Police Eepartment was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the report be approved and filed. Motion carried. Report of the Committee on Street Maintenance, Building, Pur- chasing and Library, was read. Guards Co. requesting permit to operate guard and patrol service within.the City. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be f'iled and the matter ref'erred to the Police Department f'ro in- vestigation and report. Motion carried. Communication f'rom West Coast Fast Freight, Inc. requesting permit to operate a Motor Freight Terminal on Lot 7, Tract 14256, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the commu- nication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication f'rom University of Calif'ornia of'fering a course of' Fire Protection Engineering, Chemicals and Explosives at the University Extension Downtown Center, 813 So. Hill Street, beginning February 15, 1949, was read. (Referred to City Council by Fure Commission. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the commu- nication be filed and matter approved. Motion carried.
