J. Furlong. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded .by Anderson, that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved and filed. Motion carried. RESOLUTION NO. 1428, a Resolution of Condolence was read on the passing of Thomas V. Cassidy, City Attorney. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that Resolution No. 1428 be adopted. Motion carried. A RESOLUTION O:f!' THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON EXPRESSING SORROW AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO THE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY OF THOMAS V. CASSIDY, CITY ATTORNEY, UPON HIS PASSING, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: BE IT RESOLVED That by the death of Judge Thomas V. Cassidy the City of Vernon has suffer- ed an irreparable lOSS, and each member of the Council has lost a personal friend. For more than twenty-seven (27) years Judge Cassidy has been City Attorney, performing the arduous duties of that office with great and unusual ability, diligence and integrity. Despite the great demands made upon him he was never too busy to listen to the troubles of others and was always ready with helpful counsel and advise. We extend to his family our most sincere sympathy. This Resolution shall be incorporated in the minutes of this Council Meeting, and a copy sent to the widow and family of Judge Cassidy. Communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, requesting authority to emplOY Mr. Amelio Valentine as semi-skilled laborer in Street Department at rate of $8.00 per day, effective March 21, 1949, was read. ;I;t was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communication be filed and request granted. Motion carried. Communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, requesting authority to employ Mr. Arthur J. Scott as semi-skilled laborer in Street and Water Departments at rate of $8.00 per day, effective March 31, 1949, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson, that the communication be filed and request granted. Motion carried. . Communication from Los Angeles-By Products Company, request- 1ng permission to temporarily store precipitating material on their property known as the Metropolitan Pit, Alameda Street near 37th Street. Precipitating material is composed of shredded steel containers, processed at a temperature of approximately 1,000 degrees and shredded to the specifications of customers, was read. Giles, Chief of Police on request of U.S. Guards for permit to conduct a guard and watch service within the City. Chief Giles recommends that request be granted upon the filing of proper bond, was read. It was moved by Anderson seconded by Mailliard that the report be filed and the recommendafion be concurred in. Motion carried. Communication from Hudson Sales Corp. requesting permit to conduct an automobile parts and accessory business at 3108 E. ~6th Street, was read. It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from California Intrastate Trucking, requesting a permit to conduct a trucking business at 2800 S. Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by TrOWbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from the Dena Company, Inc. requesting 'a permit to conduct a wholesale lumber business at 2500 E. 26th Street, was read. It was moved by TrOWbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Rich Steel Company requesting a permit to conduct a steel warehousing and jobbing business at 2~35 E. 37th Street, was read. It was moved by Mailliard,seconded by Anderson that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from R. E. Burkett Sales Co. requesting a permit to handle the color sales lithography of the Pacific Press, 5201 Soto Street, was read. It was moved by TrOWbridge, seco~ded by Mailliard that the communication and request of R.E. Burkett Sales Co. be refered to the Fire Department for a report. Motion carried. Communic~tion from Standard Pipe & Supply Co. requesting a permit to conduct and operate an oil field pipe supply and steel business at 2820 S. Alameda Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of the Standard Pipe & Supply Co. be refered to the Police Department for report. Motion carried. Communication from the Mile Company, Inc. requesting a permit to conduct the business of manufacturing sub-assemblies for the bedding industry, boxspring frames and spring units at 3200 Bandini Blvd. was read. It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Anderson that the communication be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Margaret and Emil Schulz requesting a permit to operate a lunch room at 3317 E. 50th street, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication be filed and permit be granted, subject to the approval of the Poliee Department. Motion carried. Communication from Cleveland Twist Drill Co. requesting curb painting at 2301 E. 38th Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson that the communication be filed and the matter refered to the Police Department. Communication from the United States Paper and Hardware Co. requesting that street sweepings be picked up at Soto Street and E. 26th Street, was read. Young as Special Counsel in the matter of representing the City of Vernon in a suit against the City of Los Angeles to determine certain rights under various sewer contracts, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that Resolution No. 1429, be adopted. Motion carried. Communication from F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief, requesting authority to employ Eugene V. Henry as hoseman at salary of $274.80 per month effective April 1, 1949 was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that eo~1cation be filed and request granted. Motion carried.
