19490607 Regular City Council Meeting - Minutes MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON HELD ON JUNE 7, 1949, AT 2:00 P.M. D'l'HE OFFICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL, 4305 SANTA FE AVE- NUE~ VERNON~ CALIFORNIA COUNCILMEN PRESENT: Anderson, Furlong, Mailliard and Trowbridge. COUNCILMEN ABSENT : Leonis. The meeting was called to order by Mayor R.J.Furlong. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved and filed. Motion ' carried. Communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, request- ing authority to employ Manuel H. Zamorano as semi-skilled laborer in the Street and Water Department at rate of $8.00 per day, effective June 8, 1949, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliardthat the communication be filed and the request of the City Engineer be granted. Motion carried. .. Communication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, request- ing authority to employ Ray J. Corella as Pump Operator in the Water Department at the rate of $260.00 per month, effective June 1, 1949, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, 'seconded by Mailliard that the communication be filed and the request of-the City Engineer be granted. Motion carried. C~unication from Francis Bates, City Engineer, request- ing authority to change the classification of Amelio Valentine from semi-skilled laborer in the Street Department at rate of $8.00 per day to Street Sweeper at rate of $175.00 per month, effective June 1, 1949, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication be filed and the request of the City Engineer be granted. Motion carried. Communication from E. Giles, Police Chief, requesting authority to destroy 44 obsolete badges of the Police Department, was read. It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Trowbridge that the request of the Police Chief be granted. Motion carried. Communication from State Controller submitting a revised estimate of Motor Vehicle License Fee Apportionments for the fiscal year 1949-50, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of the State Controller be filed. Motion carried. Communication from A. E. Judd Company, requesting a permit to conduct a business of Manufacturers Representative for plumbing and industrial items at 2323 E. 27th Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of A. E. Judd Company be filed, and permit granted. Motion carried. 1. 289 Communication from Commerce Supply Corp. requesting a permit to conduct a retail and wholesale floor covering, draperies and curtain store at 4)36 District Blvd. was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of Commerce Supply Corp. be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Quality Hardware Manufacturing Co. requesting a permit to conduct a builders hardware Manufacturing business at )~OO Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the communication of Quality Hardware Manufacturing Co. be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. Communication from Maintenance Specialty Co. requesting a permit to conduct a business of warehousing and selling a~tomotive products at 5408 Santa Fe Avenue, was read. It was moved by Tro'lbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of Maintenance Specialty Co. be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. COmmunication from John Cavanaugh Co. requesting a permit to conduct a sales business for the products manufactured by the Western Washer & Stamping Co. at 2111 E. 51st street, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Mailliard that the communication of John Cavanaugh Co. be filed and permit granted. Motion carried. 2. 290 1- Communication from E. Giles, Police Chief, requesting the approval of vacation time of C. E. Sistrunk, Street Painter, from June 27th to JlUy 10, 191r9, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson that the communication of the Police Chief be filed and the vacation of the Street Painter be approved. Motion carried. Application l1r576 - Southern California Gas Co. to repair gas main at Malabar Street and Pacific Blvd. Application 11r577 - Southern California Gas Co. to install curb valve at 2750 S. Alameda Street. Application 11r578 - Southern California Gas Co. to abandon service at 2150-5ot E. 37jh Street. Application 11r579 - Southern California Gas Co. to abandon gas service at 1r700 S. Boyle Avenue. Application 11r580 - Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. to place 1 ground brace and replace 1 pole in alley E/O Santa Fe Avenue, 133 ft. S/O 51rth Street. Application l1r58l - Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. to place 1 pole in SIS E. 26th Street, 150 ft. W/O Minerva Street. Application 11r582 - Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. to place 1 ground brace in SIS Leonis Blvd. 288 ft. E/O Seville Ave. Application 11r583 - Southern California Edison Co. to install 1r C.I. roof drains through curb in Fruitland Avenue and Pacific Blvd. Application 11r581r- Southern California Edison Co. to relocate 21r poles and 3 anchors for street widening in E. 1r8th Street, between Santa Fe Avenue and Alameda Street. Application 11r585 - U. S. Steel Products Co. to construct roof drain through curb in N/S Fruitland Avenue, 302 ft. E/O Santa Fe Avenue. Application 11r586 - B. G. Rhodes to construct driveway, curb and' sidewalk in wlS Boyle Avenue from 50th Street to 144 ft. N/O 50th Street. Application 11r587 - Southern Pacific Co. to repair track crossing Fruitland Avenue, E/O Santa Fe Avenue. 3. 29:1 -- Application 14588 - L. A. Young Spring & Wire Corp. to connect additional plumbing facilities to sewer at 3200 E. Slauson Ave. Application 14589 - Modern Pattern & Foundry Co. to connect additional plumbing facilities to sewer at 5610 Alcoa Avenue. Communication from C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, in regards to a request from the state Board of Equalization for payment of $618.17 for sales taxes on transfers of Joint Pole interests from August 1933, to June 1948, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson that the communication of the Consulting Engineer be filed and the matter be referred to Special Attorney, E. R. Young, as to the legali)y of the claim. Motion carried. Report of C. A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on operations of electrical system by the Southern CalifoFnia Edison Co. for the month of April, 19~9, was read. It was moved by Mailliard seconded by Trowbridge that the report of the Consulting Engineer be receIved and filed. Motion carried. Report of the Police Department was read. It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Trowbridge that the report of the Police Department be received and filed. Motion carried. Communication from the Vernon Paving Company requesting an extension of an additional 30 days for the completion of the improvement of Hampton Street and Fruitland Avenue, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Anderson that the communication of the Vernon Paving Company be filed and the matter of an extension of time for the improvement of Hampton Street and Fruitland Avenue be referred to the City Engineer and Special Attorney. Motion carried. Demands on the General Fund in the sum of $21,227.12, consisting of the following items, were read. It was moved by V~illiard, seconded by Anderson that Resolution No. Ilt-36 be adopted.
