AVENUE. VERNON. CALIFORNIA
COUNCIL PRESENT: Anderson, Furlong, Mail1iard, Poxon, Trowbridge
COUNCIL ABSENT : None
The meeting was called to order by Mayor R.J. Furlong.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
minutes of the meeting held on June 5, 1951, be approved as read.
Motion carried.
The Clerk announced that this was the time and place
for the opening of bids for Street Department Truck under Specific-
ations No. 155, and Water Department Truck under Specifications
No. 156.
The Clerk stated that he has received bids from
General Motors Corporation~ Truck & Coach Division - White Motor
Company and International Harvester Company on Specifications
No. 155 and from the General Motors Truck & Coach Division on
Specifications No. 156.
Upon the reading of the bids, it was moved by Poxon
seconded by Anderson that the bids be referred to the City Engineer
and City Attorney for checking and report. Motion carried.
Communication from County of Los Angeles Air
Pollution Control District regarding open burning of weeds, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the communication from the County of Los Angeles Air Pollution
Control District be referred to the Fire Department. Motion carried.
Tentative Budget Appropriation figures for fiscal
year 1951-52 in the amount of $1,185,072.61 was submitted by the
Manager of City Affairs.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that
the Tentative Budget for 1951-52 be received for study_ Motion carried.
Communication from Vernon Chamber of Commerce requesting
an opportunity to study 1951-52 budget before final adoption, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that a
copy of Tentative Budget for 1951-52 be forwarded to the Vernon
Chamber of Commerce. Motion carried.
Communication from Department of Engineering, University
of California, advising of a conference to be held June 21 1951, at
the Automobile Club of Southern California on traffic and Intersection
channelization, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
communication from Department of Engineering, University of California
be referred to the City Engineering and Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from A & D Trucking Company requesting
permit to operate trucking business at 2034 E. 37th Street, was read.
It was moved by Mai11iard. seconded by Poxon that the
requ.est of A & D Trucking Company be approved and permit granted.

Communication from A. E. Poulsen & Company requesting
permit to conduct a business of manufacturing conveying, processing
and other machinery at 3305' E. Slauson Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of A. E. Poulsen & Company be approved and permi:b granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Dennison's Foods requesting permit
to operate private warehouse at 4827 E. 49th Street, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of Dennison's Foods be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from George D. Roper Corporation requesting
permit to conduct warehouse at 4819 E. 49th Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson that the
request of George D. Roper Corporation be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Wesco Merchandise Company requesting
permit to conduct a wholesale merchandising business at 3111 E. 44th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard that the
request of Wesco Merchandise Company be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from R. K. Jamison requesting permit to
operate a wholesale beer distribution business at 2130 E. 37th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the request
of R. K. Jamison be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from American Locomotive Company requesting
permit to conduct warehouse to stock diesel locomotive parts at 3035'
E. 46th Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
request of American Locomotive Company be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Delron Company requesting permit to
conduct business of manufacturing self-locking nuts and bolts at
2306 E. 38th Street, was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
request of Delron Company be referred to the Fire Department for report.
Motion carried.
Communication from Good "N" Rich Ice Cream Company request-
ing permit to operate ten vehicles for sale of ice cream within city,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Good "Nfl Rich Ice Cream Company be referred to Police
Department for recommendation. Motion carried.

Communication and report of F.R. Donnelly, Fire Chief,
on application of Dorn Products Corporation for permit to conduct
a flour jobbing business at 4516 Maywood Avenue, was read. Fire Chief
Donnelly recommended that permit be granted.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that
the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted
to Dorn Products Corporation. Motion carried.
Communication and report of F.H. Donnelly, Fire Chief,
on application of Southern Bolt & Screw Company for permit to operate
machine shop at 3026 Leonis B1vd.~ was read. Fire Chief Donnelly
recommended that permit be granted.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard that
the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication and report of F.R. Donnelly, Fire Chief,
on application of B. F. Garloff for permit to conduct wholesale dog
food business at 4802 Loma Vista Avenue, was read. Fire Chief Donnelly
recommends that permit be granted.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Mailliard that
the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Modern Pattern & Foundry Company
requesting curb painting at 5610 Alcoa Avenue, was read.
Communication from American Can Company requesting
repainting of cross-walk on Santa Fe Avenue between lt8th and 49th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that
the communications from Modern Pattern & Foundry Company and American
Can Company be referred to the Police Department with power to act.
Motion carried.
Communication from Cleveland Twist Drill Company
requesting permit to haul refuse from premises of 2301 E. 38th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of Cleveland Twist Drill Company be filed and permit issued.
Motion carried.
Communication from Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company
requesting permit to haul refuse from premises of 4440 E. 49th street,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company be filed and permit
issued. Motion carried.
Communication from Capps Machinery Company requesting
curb painting at 3876 Santa Fe Avenlle, was read. .
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Capps Machinery Company be referred to the Police Department
with power to act. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer,
requesting approval of employment of Mr. Ronald P. Shaw as chainman
for the Engineering Department at rate of $250.00 per month, effective
June 18, 1951, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.

Communication and report of W.B. HOllingworth,
City Engineer, on the request of H. Muehlstein & Company for
improvement in E. 26th Street, was read. City Engineer recommends
that street be graded and oiled in accordance with City Engineer
Drawing No. A4-ll52 for a sum not to exceed $975.00.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard
that the recomm endation of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 1537 - approving plan and profile
designated I1City Engineer's Drawing No. A4-1l52, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge seconded by Mailliard
Resolution No. 1537 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Truck was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge

157 on motor truck for use of Water Department, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge
Resolution No. 1538 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Ordinance No. 644 - Regulating sale, use and/or
manufacture of fireworks, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard
that Ordinance No. 644 be adopted, and that this Ordinance is urgently
required for the immediate preservation of public health, peace and
safety, and shall take effect immediately upon its passage. Motion
carried.
