The meeting was called to order by Mayor R.J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson that the
minutes of the meeting held July 17th and 24th, 1951, be approved as
written and transmitted. Motion carried.
, Communication from W.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer,
requesting approval of employment of Thomas S. Sanchez as semi-skilled
laborer in Street Department at rate of $9.00 per day effective July
26, 1951, ~s read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer
requesting approval of employment of Ignacio V. Zarasoza as semi-skilled
laborer in Street Department at rate of $9.00 per day effective July
26, 1951, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from W. B. Hollingworthl City Engineer,
requesting approval of employment of Joe Matich as sem -skilled laborer
in Street Department at rate of $9.~O per day effective August 8, 1951,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from W. B. HOllingworth, City Engineer,
requesting approval of employment of John A. Saavedra as semi-skilled
laborer in Street Department at rate of $9.00 per day effecti~e August
8, 1951, was read. .
It was moved by Anderson, sedonded by Trowbridge that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from F.H. Donnelly, Fire Chief, requesting
authority to to permanently appoint Finney J. Terry as Hoseman effective
August 16, 1951, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Fire Chief be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from F.H. DonnellYJ Fire Chief, requesting
authority to permanently appoint Robert D. Riddell. as Hoseman effective
August 16, 1951, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Fire Chief be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from Cook-Boynton Company requesting
permit to conduct a food brokerage business at 4802 Loma Vista Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard that a permit
be granted to Cook-Boynton Company. Motion carried. 281

requesting a permit to conduct a wholesale and retail lumber
business at 4560 Naywood Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Nailliard, seconded by Trowbridge
that a permit be granted H.N. Nelson Lumber Company. Notion carried.
Communication from Engineering Finance Corporation
requesting permit to operate machine shop at 4617 Hampton Street,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon th&t the
request of the Engineering Finance Corporation be referred to the
Fire Department. Notion carried.
Communication from Tri-State Construction Company
requesting a permit to conduct a masonry contracting business at
2638 Leonis Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
a permit be granted to Tri-State Comstruction Company. Motion carried.
Communication from Continental Can Company requesting
a permit to conduct and operate a warehouse at 2860 E. 54-th Street,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that a
permit be granted the Continental Can Company. Motion carried.
Communication from Jum O'Kelly requesting a permit
to operate a wholesale meat jobbing business at 5050 S. Alameda Street,
was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that a
permit be granted Jim O'Kelly. Hotion carried.
Co~munication from Vascoloy-Ramet Corporation requesting
a permit to condllct an engineering office at 3314 Fruitland Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Trowbridge that
a permit be granted Vascoloy-Ramet Corporation. Notion carried.
Communication from Chas. Pfizer & Company requesting
a permit to conduct a warehouse for storage of manufactured chemicals
at 4814 Lorna Vista Avenue, was read.
It was moved bybAnderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Chas Pfizer & Company be referred to the Fire Department.
Hotion carried.
Communication from Eph J. Hoffman requesting permit to
conduct an Off-Sale Paclcage liquor store at 3939 S. Soto Street, was
read.
It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Anderson that a
permit be granted Eph J. Hoffman. Motion carried.

It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon
that the requests of Diversified Metal Products Company, American
Can Company, Studebaker Corporation and Owens Parks Lumber Company
be referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion
carried.
Communication from Leota S. Allen requesting
trimming of hedge at n.w. corner of 49th Street and Santa Fe Avenue
so as not to block view of coming traffic, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard that
the communication of Leota S. Allen be referred to the City Engineer.
Hotion carried.
Communication from Walter E. Ross, Deputy City Clerk
requesting approval of vacation leave starting AU~11st 13, 1951, was
read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard
that the request of Walter E. Ross be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from Southern California Edison Company
together with check in amolUlt of $187,832.50 for payment of Light &
Power Bond Interest & Redemptions due October 1, 1951 and April 1,
1952, vlas read.
It was moved by Poxon seconded by Trowbridge that
the communication from the Southern California Edison Company be referred
to Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer for checking and report.

Communication from League of California Cities (Los
Angeles County Division) submitting report of Los Angeles Flood Control
District in regards to Storm Drains, was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the communication and report of League of California Cities and
Los Angeles Flood Control District be referred to the City Engineer.
Notion carried.
Progress Report No. 55 submitted by Lloyd Aldrich,
City Engineer, City of Los Angeles on Hyperion Activated Sludge Plant
for month of June, 1951, was received.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard
that Report No. 55 submitted by City of Los Angeles be referred to
Vernon City Engineer. Motion carried.
Communication and report from Vernon Industrial
Development Association, was received.
It ,vas moved by Poxon seconded by Trowbridge that
report submitted by Vernon Industrial ~evelopment Association be
referred to the City Attorney. Motion carried.
Budget Requirements submitted by City Engineer for
operation of Water Department for fiscal year 1951-52 was received.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
Budget Requirements for operation of Water Department be referred to
the Finance COIDnlittee. Motion carried.

to the issuance of $369,000. Water & Fire Bonds of 1946. Motion carried.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the City Engineer be instructed to submit a report in regards to
city water conditions. Motion carried.
