COUNCIL ABSENT : None
The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson that the
minutes of the meeting held April 15, 1952 be approved as written and
transmitted. Motion carried.
Communication from Downie Bros., requesting proper
street markings for streets intersecting with Alameda Street on east
roadway to avoid confusion with street markings on west roadway of
Alameda Street, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
comnlunication be referred to the City Engineer for report and recomITiendation.
Notion carried.
Communication from Warner Poultry Company requesting
the City to adopt an appropriate ordinance or resolution requesting the
County Health Department to make inspections at their plant located at
3137 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Warner Poultry Company be referred to the City Attorne~ and
Administrative Assistant for study and report. Motion carried.
Communication from Interstate Restaurant Supply Company
requesting permit to conduct a business to be ID1O'~ as Dad's Root Beer
Fountain Syrup Company at 4520 Maywood Avenue, was read.

Communication from Armstrong Cork Company requesting
permit to operate warehouse at 5005 Hampton Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Tr0\1bridge that the
request of Armstrong Cork Company be approved and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Allied Electric Products, Inc., request-
ing permit to conduct a warehouse for electric and electronic supplies
at 2724 Leonis Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Trovmridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of Allied Electric Products Inc., be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.

Communication from O. L. Hood Inc., requesting permit to
conduct a business of new and used electric motors and electric hand tools
at 4312 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of O.L. Hood Inc., be approved and permit granted. Motion

permit tg conduct an automobile and truck repairing business at
1938 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard
that the request of A. H. Ross & Company be approved and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Baker-Cra~ord-Bishop requesting
permit to conduct a food brokerage business at 4814 Loma Vista Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of Baker-Crawford-Bishop be approved and permit granted.

Communication from Pioneer Rl1bber Mills requesting
permit to conduct warehouse and sales office at 5001 Hampton Street,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Pioneer Rubber Mills be approved and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Abe Kanter requesting permit to
operate an ice cream truck within the city, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of Abe Kanter be referred to the Police Department.
Motion carried.
Communication from Harry Lyon requesting permit to
operate a cigarette vending machine in cOlli1ection with service station
at 4885 Pacific Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Harry Lyon be referred to the Police Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from Safeway Stores Inc., requesting repaint-
ing of crosswalk at 1925 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.
Communication from Aluminum Company of America requesting
curb painting at Fruitland and Alcoa Avenues, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
requests of the Safeway Stores Inc. and the Aluminum Company of America
be referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried.
Communication from Haas, Baruch & Company requesting
permit to haul refuse from premises of 4700 S. Boyle Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of Haas, Baruch & Company be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication and report of the Fire Department on applic-
ation of John p. Lynch Company for permit to operate a laundry and dry
cleaning supply business at 4702 E. 50th Street, was read. The Fire
Department recommended that a permit be granted.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the recommendation of the Fire Department be received and approved and
a permit granted to John P. Lynch Company. Motion carried.

Communication and report or Fire Department on application
of Reid Enterprises to conduct a business of machine shop and aircraft
hardware at 2363 E. 38th Street, was read. The Fire Department recommends
that a permit be granted.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Foxon that the
recommendation od the Fire Department be received and approved and a
permit be granted the Reid Enterprises. Motion carried.
Cownunication from F.H. Donnelly, Fire Chief requesting
authority to promote Mr. A. K. Forbes from Hoseman Class 1 to Relief
Driver effective May 1, 1952, was read. CA. K. Forbes replaces D. C.
Jarvis, resigned.)
It was moved by Trowbridge, Seconded by Mailliard that
the request and recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved. Motion
carried.
Communication from F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief requesting
authority to employ Mr. Jack C. Stradtman as Hoseman Class 3 effective
May 1, 1952, was read. Crtt. Stradtman replaces Mr. D. C. Jarvis)
Communication from F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief requesting
authority to order from the Gamewell Company a dial type transmitter
for use in Fire Alarm System at a cost of $975.00 f.o.b. factory, was read.
It was moved by Tro'vbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the
request of the Fire Chief be approved and the equipment ordered. Motion
carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer approving
and recoITill1ending request of Ascar Mayer Company to pave driveway area
between propert line and existing pavement at 3301 E. Vernon Avenue, was
read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
recommendation of the City Engineer be approved. Mption carried.
An application by the Pacific Electric Railway Company and
the Los Angeles Transit Lines before the Plublie Utility Commission to
eliminate tokens and make certain other fare changes in fares, was read.
It was moiJed by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
application of the Pacific Electric Railway Company and the Los Angeles
Transit Dines be filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Gillespie Furniture Company requesting
permit to operate warehouse at 4494 E. 49th Street, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the
request of Gillespie Furniture ~ompany be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.

Progress Report No. 64 submitted by Loyd Aldrich, City
Engineer, City of Los Angeles on Hyperion Activated Sludge Plant for
month ending March 31, 1952 was received.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the report
submitted by the City Engineer of the City of Los Angeles be referred to
the Vernon City Engineer. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department was received.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the report
of the Police Department be received and filed. Motion carried.

Communication from W. B. Hollingworth, City Engineer
recommending the sale of obsolete pumping equipment to Barber Bridge
Drilling Company, was read. (336 ft. @ 1.00 per foot)
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson that the
recommendation of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer
submitting Specifications No. 164 for deep well turbine pumping unit
for well No. 11 and requesting that notice inviting bids be authorized,
was read.
Resolution No. 1592 - a resolution of the City Council
of the City of Vernon approving Specifications No. 164 now on file in
the office of the City Clerk for the furnishing and delivery of one
new deep well turbine pumping unit for water well No. 11, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbri~ge that
Resolution No. 1592 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

painting at 5410 Alcoa Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the requests of Stockham Valve & Fitting Company, Tube Sales Company
and Ideal Spring Company be referred to the Police Department with power
to act. Motion carried.
Communication from G. A. Anderson requesting two week
vacation leave commencing May lOth, was read.
It was moved by Mailliard and seconded by Poxon that
the request of G.A. Anderson be granted. Motion carried.
lne City Attorney presented Resolution No. 1591 under
order of April 23, 1952.
Resolution No. 1591 - a resolution of the City Council
of the City of Vernon declaring its intention to become a part of the
Central Basin Municipal Water District, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
Resolution No. 1591 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.
