The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard that the
minutes of the meeting held June 4, 1952, be approved as written and
transmitted. Motion carried.
Communication and report of W.B. HOllingsworth, City
Engineer, on bids received June 4, 1952 for the resurfacing of Fruitland
Avenue in accordance ~th Specifications No. 165 were tabulated as follows:
Vernon Paving Company $ 8,130.00
Griffith Company 9,290.50
C.O.Sparks-Mundo Engr. Co. 10,860.00
The City Engineer recommended that the contract be awarded to the Vernon
Paving Company.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the communication and report of the City Engineer be received con-curred in.
Motion carried.
Resolution No.
Resolution 1601 - a Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon awarding contract for the resurfacing of Fruitland Avenue
from Pacific Boulevard to Downey Road in the City of Vernon with premix
rock and pavement in accordance with Specifications No. 165, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
1601 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.
Ayes: Anderson, Furlong, Mail1iard, Poxon, Trowbridge.

Absent: None
Communication from Zenith Die Casting Company requesting
permit to conduct a die casting business at 5164 Alcoa Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Zenith Die Casting Company be referred to the Fire Department.
Motion carried.
Communication from Mother's Cake & Cookie Company request-
ing permit to operate a wholesale bakery warehouse at 4929 Hampton Street,
was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
request of Mother's Cake & Cookie Company be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from R. J. Bradberry Company requesting peemmt
to operate 9 peanut vending machines within city, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that the
request of R. J. Bradberry Company be approved and permit granted.

Communication from the Accurate Vending Corporation
protesting the fees charged on vending machines, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
communication from the Accurate Vending Corporation be referred to the
Administrative Assistant. Motion carried.
Communication from Pinkerton's National Detective
Agency requesting permit and license to conduct a Watch and Patrol
service within the City, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request from Pinkerton's National Detective Agency be referred to the
Police Department. Motion carried.
Communication from Nationwide Food Service, Inc. requesting
permit to operate a cafeteria at the Norris-Thermador Company, 5215 S.
Boyle Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Nationwide Food Service be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from Norris-Thermador Company requesting
permit to haul refuse from premises of 5215 S. Boyle Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the ~orris-Thermador Company be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer,
requesting approval of the employment of Mr. Rufino Y. Veloz as semi-
skilled laborer in Street Department at rate 0.1' $10.20 per day, effect-
ive June 11, 1952, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer,
recommending that Mr. Marvin J. Cornett be granted a leave of absence
with pay from June 14th to 28th as he is a member of the United States
Naval Reserve and has been called on a training cruise, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
recommendation of the City Engineer be complied with. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer,
submitting vacation schedule of Engineering, Street and Water Departments
for year 1952 was received.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
vacation schedule filed by the City Engineer be approved and filed.
Motion carried.
Communication from E. Giles, Police Chief, recommending
that S.E. Hogan be raised from Patrolman Class 3 to Patrolman Class 2
at rate of $345.00 per month effective July 1, 1952, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
recommendation of the Police Chief be ppproved and the request be complied
with. Motion carried.

Communication from F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief,
Recommending that J. D. Wyatt and G.E. Foster be raised from hoseman
Class 2 to hoseman Class 1 at rate of $3~5.00 per month. Also, that
L.E. Graham, M. T. Mello, F. J. Terry, L. B. Kenzy, J. H. Fellhoelter,
A. W. Gray and T. H. Garner be raised from hoseman Class 3 to hoseman
Class 2 at rate of $330.00 per month, all effective July 1, 1952, was
read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and the request be
complied with. Motion carried.
Communication from George G. Skalsky requesting
permission to take vacation leave from June 30th to July 12, 1952,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of George G. Skalsky be approved and granted. Motion carried.
Report of C.A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer on
operations of electrical system by Southern California Edison Company
for month of April 1952, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
report of the Consulting Engineer be received and filed. Motion carried.
Communication fromW.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer,
correcting letter of November 20, 1951 regarding employment of Mr. Norberto
M. Robles at rate of $11.20,per day. in Street Department, and stating
that rate of pay should have read $10.20 per day, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the communication from the City Engineer be received and filed. Motion
carried.
Communication from W.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer,
together with Specifications No. 166 for the drilling of two 18 inch
water wells on 50th Street approximately 690 feet west of Downey Road,
and on west side Downey Road approximately 600 feet south of Vernon Avenue,
was read.
Resolution 1602 - a Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon approving Specifications No. 166 for the drilling
of two water wells and the developing and testing for the City of Vernon,
was read.

Report of the Police Department be received and filed. Motion carried.
Resolution 1603 -a Resolution of the City Council
of the City of Vernon declaring the prevailing wage rate per diem to be
used in the drilling of two water wells in accordance with Specifications
No. 166, was read.

Notice of Regular monthly meeting of the League of
California Cities to be held at the South Gate Auditorium on June 19,
19'52, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
notice of monthly meeting of the League of California Cities be filed.

Resolution 1604 - a Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon allocating the estimated revenues for the year 19'51-'52,
was read.

Tentative budget requests of various city departments
including bond interest and redemptions for fiscal year 1952-'53, was
Received.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
Tentative Budget Requests for fiscal year 19'52-'53 be referred to the
Finance Committee. Motion carried.
Resolution 1600 - a Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon authorizing and directing the City Treasurer to
~ransfer monies from the Emergency Fund to the several Bond Interest and
edemption Funds, in lieu of delinquent taxes the sum of $'558.31, was
read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mai1liard that
Resolution 1600 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

approval of the City Engineer were presented.
Application 17267 -mSouthern California Gas Company to drill and fill bar
holes in the N. & S. side of Fruitland Avenue between
Pacific Boulevard and Downey Road.
Application 17268 - Southern California Gas Company to drill and fill bar
holes in NIS 27th Street from 87 feet to 1'54 feet
W/O Santa It'e Avenue.
Application 17269 Southern California Gas Company to repair gas service
at 2335 E. 27th Street.
Application 17270 - Southern California Gas Company to drill and fill
bar holes in N/S Vernon Avenue from 257 ft. E/O
Hawthorne Street to St. Charles Street.
Application 17271 -Southern California Gas Company to install 3/4 in.
gas service at 3315 Leonis Boulevard.
Application 17272 Southern California Gas Company to relay gas service
at 3321 E. Slauson Avenue.

that excavation applications numbered 17267 to 17279 inclusive be filed
and permits granted. Motion carried.

Communication from General Petroleum Corporation
requesting permission to lay and install an 8 inch oil pipe line across
land owned by City of Vernon east of Soto Street and adjacent to 37th
Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of the General Petroleunl Corporation be referred to the
City Engineer and City Attorney for the drawing of proper license
agreement for the installation of 8 inch oil pipe line across land
owned by City of Vernon at an annual rental of $50.00 per year. Motion
carried.
