COUNCIL PRESENT: Anderson, Furlong, Mailliard, Poxon, Trowbridge
COUNCIL ABSENT : None
The meeting was called to order by Mayor R.J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon seconded by Anderson that the
minutes of the meeting held November lS, 1952 be approved as written
and transmitted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Honorable Clyde Doyle, member of
Congress, 23rd District, inviting the City Officials to call upon him at
any time in matters of interest to the City, and hoping to attend a
meeting with the City Council in the near future, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
communication from the Honorable Clyde Doyle, Member of Congress be
received in appreciation, and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Camp Fire Girls, Rio Hondo Area
Council requesting permission to sell peanuts from December 6th to 20th
in front of Owens Illinois Glass Company and other factories in that
area to further the Camp Fire program in the Southeast area, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Rio Hondo C~ Fire Girls Council be approved and permit
granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Atlas Bolt & Supply Company requesting
permit to conduct business at 4510 Seville Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that
the request of the Atlas Bolt & Supply Company be approved and permit granted
Motion carried'.
Communication from Kuhl-Warren & Company requesting a
permit to conduct a food brokerage business at 4814 Loma Vista Avenue,
was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
request of Kuhl-Warren & Company be approved and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from Johns-Manville Sales Corporation, reques
ing a permit to conduct and office and warehouse at 2960 Leonis BOulevard,
was read.
It waS moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the reque-
st of Johns-Manville Sales Corporation be approved and permit granted.
Motion carried.

requesting permit to operate warehouse at 3157 E. 44th Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge that the
request of The Grabler Manufacturing Company be approved and permit granted.

requesting curb painting at 4445 s. Soto Street, was read.
Communication from Clingan & Fortier Inc. requesting curb
painting at 2929 Santa Fe Avenue, was read.
Communication from Nasan's Outdoor Furniture requesting
curb painting at 2040 E. 45th Street, was read.
Communication from The Grable Manufacjuring Company request-
ing curb painting at 3157 E. 44th Street, was read.
Communication from R. A. Reed Electric Company requesting
curb painting at 5503 S . Boyle Avenue, was read. -
Communication from Wm. R. Whittaker Company requesting
repainting of crosswalk at 1915 E. 51st Street, was read.
Communication from Container Corporation of America request-
ing painting of loading zone on south-side of 50th Street, east of Boyle
Avenue, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the
requests of the Market Cooperative Packing Company, Clingan & Fortier Inc.,
Nasan's Outfoor Furniture, The Grable Manufacturing Company, R.A. Reed
Electric Company, WID. R. Whittaker Company and the Container Corporation
of America be referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion
carried.
Communication from E. J. Stanton & Son requesting permission
to plant Oleander trees on the south side of 38th Street between Alameda
and Ross Streets, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the request
of E. J. Stanton & Son be referred to the City Engineer with power to act.

Communication from W. B. HOllingworth, City Engineer, with
letter of E. K. Wood Lumber Company attached protesting any effort to close
grade crossing over Southern Pacific Company tracks from east to west
roadway of Alameda Street between 48th Street and Vernon Avenue, and recomm-
ending that the communication from E.K. Wood Lumber Company be referred to
the City Attorney and Administrative Assistant, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the recomm-
endation of the City Engineer be concurred in. Motion carried.
Communication from W.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer, with
copy of letter of Mr. H. F. Holley, Secretary of Los Angeles County Grade
Crossing Committee attached regarding appointment of 14r. Clayton Page to
serve in place of l-fessrs. Lloyd Aldrich gild Ralph T. Dorsey and recommending
that letter of Mr. H. F. Holley be referred to the City Attorney and
Administrative Assistant, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the connmm.-
ication and recommendation of the City Engineer be concurred in. l-fotion

Communication and report of F.R. Donnelly, Fire Chief recomm-
ending that the Art-Craft Engraving Company be granted a permit to conduct
business at 2708 Leonis Boulevard, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge that the
reco~nendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted to the
Art-Craft Engraving Company. Motion carried.

Communication from F.R. DOIll1elly Fire Chief, requesting
permission to send Assistant Chief Husted and Captain Kirk to attend a
meeting of Southern California Fire Prevention Inspectors at Culver City
on December 8,1952 together with an expense allowance of $5.00 each,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
request of the Fire Chief be approved and allowed. Motion carried.
Communication from F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chief advising
thatthe Los Angeles Board of Education has granted permission to the
Boy Scouts to hold their meetings at the Vernon School on Saturdays, was
read.

It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
communication from the Fire Chief be placed on file. Motion carried.
Communication from John B. Moore, Administrative Assist-
ant with copy of order attached signed by Hayor Furlong to the city
employees in regards to salary and wage schedules, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the
order signed by the Mayor be approved. Motion carried.
Communication fromW.B. HOllingworth, City Engineer,
requesting approvab of employment of Mr. Auggie M. Osuna as semi-skilled
laborer in Street epartment effective December 1, 1952 at rate of $12.25
per day, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the request of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from vI.B. Hollingworth, City Engineer,
recommending that an amendment be made in the contract with RCA Service
Company to include walkie-talkie units purchased by Fire Department at
an increase of $9.97 per month, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
the recommendation of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Resolution l6~8 - a Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon approving and authorizing two Hallicrafter Walkie-
Talkie Units be included in the RCA Service Company contract, was read.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard that
1638 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that the

amending Ordinance No. 598 by adding section 25.11 fixing license on coin
vending machines, was read ~or a first reading.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon that
Ordinance No. 652 receive and pass a first reading. Motion carried.
Report o~ the Police Department was received.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
report of the Police Department be received and filed. Motion carried.
Comnmnication from E. Giles, Chief of Police, recomm-
ending that ~~. J. R. Tucker, Patrolman 4th class be raised to Patrolman
3rd class ef~ective December 15, 1952 at salary of $350.00 per month,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
recommendation of the Chief o~ Police be approved. pIotion carried.
Communication from E. Giles, Chief of Police, recomm-
ending that Mr. G. G. Vinlove, Patrolman 4th class ~e raised to Patrolman
3rd class effective December 15, 1952 at salary of ~350.00 per month,
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon that the
recommendation of the Chie~ of Police be approved. Motion carried.
