It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that the minutes or
June 2, 1953 be approved as written and submitted. Motion carried.
Communication and report rrom Carson B. Hubbard, City Attorney,
stating that he sees no particular advantage in entering into proposed
contract between Director'or Civil Derense or the State o~ California
and the City or Vernon for installing a Radio fransmitter and Receiver
was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that communication
and report of Carson B. Hubbard, City Attorney, be received and riled.
Notion carried.
Communication and report rrom F. H. Donnelly, Fire Chier,
recommending that the Singelyn & Barnes Photo Engraving Co. be granted a
permit to conduct a business or manuracturing zinc and copper printing
plates at 4216 S. Produce Plaza was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the recommend-
ation of the Fire Chier be approved and permit granted to Singelyn &
Barnes Photo Engraving Company. Motion carried.
Communication from 14rs. Ada Norris requesting a permit to operate
a cafe at 3811 So. Soto Street was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the request or
Mrs. Ada Norris be rererred to the Police Department. Motion carried.
Comnlunication from l~e McCoy Meat Company requesting a permit
to operate a meat processing business at 4360 So. Soto St. was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by 1lailliard, that the request
of The McCoy Meat Company be referred to the Fire Department. Motion
carried.
Communication from M & R Service Station requesting a permit to
operate a service station at 2601 So. Soto Street was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the request of
1'1 & R Service Station be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Alco Transportation Co. requesting a permit
to conduct a transportation business at 2225 E. 37th St. was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Hailliard, that the requ~st
of Alco Transportation Co. be annroved and permit granted. Motion

requesting a permit to conduct a transportation business at 2100 E.

conduct a transportation business at 2100 E. 25th St. was read.

Liberty Freight Lines be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from National Trucking Company requesting a permit
to conduct a transportation business at 2445 E. 26th St. was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the request of
National Trucking Company be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Henry S. Grossman Co. requesting a permit to
operate a modern Wool Pullery, Pickle and Hide Cellar at the property
consisting of 1.7 acres including the permanent easement of 251 directly
south of the Luer Packing Co., 'ivest of the Gar \'iood Co., Inc. and north
of E. 46th St. on Seville Avenue was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that the request of
Henry S. Grossman Co. be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication and report from E. Giles, Chief of Police, in regard
to the request of Southwest Motor Fleets, Inc., dba Pacific Fleet Systems,
3003 Leonis Blvd. for a permit to conduct a business of leasing motor
vehicles and selling their own used motor ~ehicles in the City of Vernon
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, th~t the recommend-
ation of the Chief of Police be approved and permit granted to Bouthwest
Hotor Fleets, Inc., dba Pacific Fleet Systems. Hotion carried.
Communication from Norris-lnermador Corp. requesting a permit to
haul refuse from premises at 5215 So. Boyle Avenue was read.
Communication from Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. requesting a
permit to haul refuse from premises at 4440 E. 49th Street vlaS read.
It was moved by Hailliard, seconded by Poxon, that the requests
of Norris-Ynermador Corp. and Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. be approved
and permits granted. Motion carried.
Report of Carl A. Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on operation of
electrical system by Southern California Edison Co. for month of April
1953 was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the report of
the Consulting Engineer be received and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from E. Giles, Chief of Police, recon~ending the
pur9hase of Econo-Liner machine for striping of streets at a quoted price
of $379 plus tax was read.
It was moved by Paxon, seconded by Nailliard, that the request
of the Police Chief be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from C. Hartin Duke, Secretary, expressing the
appreciation of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Section,
American Society of Civil Engineers, for the privilege of using the City
of Vernon Council Chambers for its Board meeting on May 27th was read.

Copy of application of Los Angeles Transit Lines and Pacific
Electric Railway Co. before the Public Utilities Commission for authority
to adjust fares was read.
It \vas moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the copy of
application of Los Angeles Transit Lines and Pacific Electric Railway Co.
before the Public Utilities Commission be received and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from vJalter B. Holling\^lorth, City Engineer, request-
ing authority to employ Mr. Luis R. Romo as semi-skilled laborer in the
Street Department at the rate of $12.25 per day, effective June 5, 1953
was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the request of
the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 660 - An Ordinance of the City of Vernon declaring
its intention to'close-up, vacate and abandon a portion of Pacific Boulevard
in the City of Vernon, County of Los Angeles, State of California, was
read for a second reading.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by _~derson, that Ordinance No. 660
receive and pass a second reading. Hotion carried.
Ordinance No. 66Q - An Ordinance of the City of Vernon dec+aring
its intention to close-up, vacate and abandon a portion of Pacific Boulevard
in the City of Vernon, COlll1ty of Los Angeles, State of California, was read
for a third and final reading.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Ordinance No. 660
receive and pass a third reading and be adopted. Motion carried.

Communication from Walter B. Hollingworth, City Engineer, recowEend-
ing that an emergency appropriation of $7500.00 be approved for Well No. 7
repairs was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by 11ailliard, that the recomrnend-
ation of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried.
Report of the Police Department vTaS presented.

the Police Department be received and filed. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 1661 - A Resolution of Condolence of the City Gouncil
of the City of Vernon, on the paSSing of Jonathan J. HOllibaugh, a Council-
man of the City of Huntington Park was read.
