Heinze, Consulting Engineer, on franchise reports of Southern Oalifornia Edison Oompany 1lllder Franchise Ordinances Nos. 503, 504 and 611 for period ending December 31, 1953, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the report subniitted by the Consulting Engineer be received and filed. Motion carried. Oommunication and report from L. O. Husted, Fire Ohief, recommending that Signal Trucking Service, Ltd. be granted a permit to operate a warehouse for the contract storing of Oompressed Cotton Linters, Baled and Banded, at 4383 Fruitland Avenue, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted to Signal Trucking Service, Ltd. Motion carried. Communication from Angelus Paperbox Oonpany, Division of Robert Gair Oompany, Inc., requesting a permit to conduct a business of manufacturing and sale of corrugated paperboard. shipping containers and corrugated paperboard products at 5120 S. Communication from Ray Davis Service Station Maintenance requesting a permit to purchase and sell used service station equipment at 1960 East 48th Street, was read. Husted, Fire Ohief, recommending that United States Rubber Company be granted a permit to operate a business of warehousing tires and tubes at 2525 E. 27th Street, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Mailliard, that the recommendation of the Fire Chief be approved and permit granted to United States Rubber COJlilany. Ziemer, Assistant Director of Civil Defense, requesting authority to file an application for matching funds on a 50-50 basis to the Federal Government for the purchase of Carfone Station Equipment 111511, Type CTR-U Station Transmitter and Receiver; and recommending that the City Council authorize the purchase of said equipment with the City of Vernon absorbing the entire cost in the event that the Federal Government disapproves said request for matching tunds, was read. It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that the request and the recommend- ation of the Fire Chief and the Assistant Director of Civil Defense be approved. MOtion carried. Communication from Southwestern Engineering Company requesting a thirty minute parking zone on the east side of Santa Fe Avenue immediately south of the 48th Street intersection, was read. It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by POXal, that the request of South- western Engineering Company be referred to the Police Department with power to act. MOtion carried. Communication from General Petroleum Corporation requesting the repainting of a portion of the South curb of East 37th Street, West of the Jewell Avenue inter- section, was read. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that the request of the General Petroleum Corporation be referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried. Progress Report No. 90 submitted by IJ.oyd Aldrich, City Engineer, City of Los Angeles, on Hyperion Activated Sludge Plant for period ending February 1, 1954, was received. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Progress Report No. 90 on Hyperion Activated Sludge Plant for period ending February 1, 1954, be referred to the Vernon City Engineer. Motion carried. Communication from W. B. Hollingworth, City Engineer, recommending the employment of Mr. Santos L. Sanchez as Serrd-skilled Laborer, Grade 1, in the Street Department at the rate of $13.00 per dq, effective March 8, 1954, was read. , It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that the recommendation of the City Engineer be approved. Motion carried. Communication and report from JOIm B. Moore, Administrative Assistant, in regard to the placing of a document or memento in a sealed compartment behind the building plaque of the new Huntington Park Elks Lodge No. 1415, was read. Administrative Assistant reported that they were unable to locate memento suitable to occasion. It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Trowbridge, that communication and report from the Administrative Assistant be received and filed. Motion carried. Notice of the regular monthly meeting of the League of California Cities, Los Angeles County Division, to be held at Torrance Civic Auditorium on March 18, 1954, was read. Hollingworth, City Engineer, submitting an estimated cost of additional e~ipment necessary to operate the Civil Defense attack warning signal and the all clear signal 'With the existing air horn at the City Hall and also of the equipment necessary for a similar installation at the new Fire Station on Fruitland Avenue, and recommending that the City Engineer be authorized to prepare the necessary application to the Federal Civil Defense Administration for matching funds for the procurement of Civil Defense Attack Warning equipment for the City of Vernon and that l1ayor R. Report of the Administrative Assistant outlined the amount of increased cost to the City, the increased cost to the enployees, and the procedures to be followed in the event it is determined that the contract is to be amended.
