The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong pursuant to a motion
of adjournment on March 16, 1954.
Communication and report from John B. Moore, AdndnistrativeAssistant,
attaching a memorandum concerning a possible additional amendment which ndght be made
to the existing contract with the State Retirement System over and above those contained
in the ~valuation heretofore submitted by the consulting actuaries, was read. The
Administrative Assistant reported that the additional amend.ilEmt is authorized by 821264
of the Government Code and would allow a retiring policeman or fireman to elect to
have the ma.ximum pension paid during his life and thereafter to have one half paid to
his widow for her life or until remarriage, and that an additional evaluation would
be required at an expense of approximately $50.00 to determine the exact cost to the
City, and that a delay of ten days is anticipated in obtaining it.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by 1<Jailliard, that an additional survey be
made to determine the exact cost to the City if additional amendment authorized by
821264 is made to the existing contract with the State Retirement System over and
above those contained in the evaluation heretofore submitted by the consulting
actuaries. Motion carried.
Communication & report from John B. Moore, Aclrninistrative Assistant, sub-
mitting Consulting Actuary's report, attached to a letter from the State Employees'
Retirement System, dated March 3, 1954, m.ich was received as a result of the request
of the City of Vernon for a quotation of the cost to the City of amending its contract
with the Retirement System to include. more liberal benefits to the City Employees,
was read. Report of the Administrative Assistant outlined the amount of increased
cost to the City, the increased cost to the employees, and the procedures to be. follow-
ed in the event it is determined that the contract is to be amended.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that the above matter be laid
over until an additional evaluation could be made to determine the exact .cost to the
City if amendment authorized by 821264 is made to the existing contract with the
State Retirement System over and above those contained in the evaluation heretofore
submitted by the consulting actuaries; and that the matter of amencl:i.ng sa.id contract
be considered at art.. ac:ljourned meeting on March 30, 1954 at 10 0' clock A.M. Motion
carried.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that the City Attorney- be
instrllcted to draft a Resolution of Appreciation for the many years of service to
the City by retiring Chief of Police Giles. Motion carried.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Trowbridge, that Lieutenant Bockhacker
be appointed temporary Chief of Police effective April 1, 1954, pending appointment
of permanent Chief of Police. Motion carried.
It was moved by Trowbridge, seconded by Poxon, that the meeting adjourn to
March 30, 1954 at 10 0' clock A.M. Motion carried.
