The adjourned regular meeting was called to order by Ma;y-or R. J. Furlong.
Comments of Honorable Thomas P. Foye, Manhattan Beach Mayor and Director,
UlS Angeles County Sanitation Districts, at Sanitation Districts' Board of Directors
meeting, Wednesday, .April 11, 1956, in regard to news release of Ocean Fish Protective
Association predicting quarantine of CaJ.ifornia Beaches,. was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that comments ot Honorable Thomas
P. Foye, Manhattan Beach Mqor and Director, UlS ~eles County Sanitation Districts,
be received and filed. Motion carried.
CoIllll1mication trom L. H. Powell, Chief Engineer, The Atchison, Topeka and
Santa Fe Railway Comp~, opposing the proposed annexation to the UlS ~eles County
Sanitation District No.2 of certain property in the City of Vernon designated as
Area "B" on Boundary" Map No. 25 of County Sanitation District No.2, 'WaS read.
It was moved by POXOll, seconded by Anderson, that conmmnication from L. H.
Powell, Chiet Engineer, The AtChison, Topeka and Santa Fe Ra.iJJlq Company, be received
and filed. Motion carried.
Communication. tram Harold A. Barnett, Consulting Engineer, SIlbmitting a
tabulation of bids received for proposed addition and alterations to Vernon City Hall
in accordance with Specifications No. 187 as revised February 20, 1956, and recommend..
ing that the contract be awarded to Thomas F. Smith, the lowest bidder, in the sum ot
$67,899.00, was read.
It was IIIOved by Anderson, seconded by Paxon, that recommendation of Consult-
ing Engineer Barnett be approved. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 1921 - A Resolution ot the City Council of the City of Vernon
accepting the bid of Thomas F. Smith for the additions and alterations to Vernon City
Ha.l.l in accordance with Specifications No. 187 as revised February 20, 1956, was read.
It WaS moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No. 1921 be
approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1922 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Vernon
employing John W. Shenk, III as Special Counsel for the City of Vernon in that certain
matter entitled City of Manhattan Beach, et al vs. City of UlS Angeles, City of Vernon,
et al., being Case No. 658951, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Malburg, that Resolution No. 1922 be
approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Ordinance No. 693 -An Ordinance of the City of Vernon regulating and licens-
ing secondhandmetaJ. dealers and junk deaJ.ers in the City of Vernon and repealing Ord-
inance No. 478" was read for a third and final reading by title.
It was moved by Anderson" seconded by Paxon" that Ordinance No. 693 receive
and pass a third reading and be adopted. MOtion carried.

Communication from James M. funtgomery, Consulting Engineer" with reference
to final payment for construction of booster pull'ping plants, pipelines, and related
work under Specifications No. 185, was read.
It was moved by Poxon" seconded by Mailliard" that communication from James
1-1. Montgomery, Consulting Engineer, be referred to the City Attorney for the drafting
of a resolution accepting said construction of booster punping plants" pipelines, and
related work under Specifications No. 185. Motion carried.
Communication from Harold A. Bamett, Consulting Engineer, requesting auth-
ority to eIlploy Arthur H. Jones as Electrician (Water Department) Grade 3 at a saJ.ary
of $460.00 per month, effective Mq 1, 1956, was read.
It was moved by Poxon" seconded by MaJ.burg" 1;hat request of Consulting
Engineer Barnett be approved. Motion carried.
Communication from Pacific Fleet Systems joining with Mission of Califomia"
Inc. in making a claim in the amount of $100.00 to cover cost of repairs to their
vehicle which was damaged in an accident with a Chevrolet owned by the City of Vernon
and used by the Vemon fire Department, was read.
It was moved by Paxon" seconded by Anderson, that joint claim of Pacific
Fleet Systems and Mission of California, Inc. be referred 1;0 the City of Vemon IS
insurance carrier" the J. R. Molony Company. Motion carried.
Communication from Air Cooled Diesel Engines Sales and Service requesting
a permit to ccnduct a business of maintenance and repairs and installation of diesel
engines at 2750 So. .AJ.ameda Street, liaS read.
It was moved by Poxon" seconded by Malburg" that reque st of Air Cooled
Diesel Ehgine, Sales and Service be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Comnnmieation from R. H. Bockhacker, Police Chief, advising that two more
motorcycle radios have been installed, bringing the total to eight fully radio equipped
motorcycles, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that communication from the
Police Chief be received and fiJe d. Motion carried.a
Requests for curb painting from .American Drill Bushing Company and Valley
Motor Lines, Inc. were read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Paxon, that requests for curb paint-
ing be referred to the Police Department with power to act. Motion carried.
Communication from L. A. Transit Lines with reference to the condition of
street surface in the track area of Santa Fe Avenue between 25th Street and Vernon
Avenue, was read.

MaJ.burg be appointed as Alternate to represent the City of Vernon on the Board of
Directors of the lea Angeles County Division, League of Oalifornia Oities. Motion
carried.
The fOllowing excavation applications, all having the approval of the
Engineering Department, were presented:
Application 20217- So. Calif. Gas Co. to drill & repair barholes to test
for gas main leaks in His Pacific Blvd.
Application 20218 - So. Oalif. Gas Co. to drill & repair barholes to test
for gas main leaks in His Vernon Avenue.
Applica:tion 202:19 - So. Oalif. Gas Co. to drill & repair barholes to test
for gas main leaks in E/s Boyle Avenue.
Application 20220 - So. Calif. Gas Co. to relay 2ft SMP gas service to
4800 Staunton Avenue, Los Angeles.
It vas moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that excavation Applications
numbered 20217 to 20220 inclusive, be filed and permits grsnted. Motion carried.
There being no further business to come before the meeting, it vas moved
by Malburg" seconded by Poxon, that the meeting adjourn. Notion carried.
