The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that the minutes of the
meeting of June 6, 1956 be approved as written and submitted. Motion carried.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that Ordinance No.
694 receive a third reading by title. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 694 - An Ordinance of the City of Vernon regulating
the disposing of refuse in sanitary sewers of the City of Vernon, repealing
Ordinance No. 268 of said City and all Ordinances in conflict herewith, was
read for a third and final reading by title.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Ordinance No. 694
receive and pass a third reading and be adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1938 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City
of Vernon authorizing the execution of a contract with Harold A. Barnett,
Consulting Engineer, for the preparation of preliminary plans and cost estimates
for the construction of approximately 6.9 miles of sewerage facilities in the
City of Vernon, was read..
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that Resolution No. 1938
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No'. 1939 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon approving Specifications No. 195 dated May 10, 1956 for structural pest
control corrections in the City Hall Building at 4305 Santa Fe Avenue, Vernon,
California, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that Resolution No. 1939
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1940 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon accepting the furnishing of one International Harvester two-ton truck in

It was moved by Malburg, seconded by Mailliard, that Resolution No. 1940
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Communication from Harold A. Barnett, Consulting Engineer, submitting
Specifications No. 197 for the restoration of street surfaces with asphalt
concrete and cement concrete in various streets, and recommending that said
Specifications be approved, was read.
It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Malburg, that the recom-
mendation of Consulting Engineer Barnett be approved. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 1941 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City
of Vernon approving Specifications No. 197 for the restoration of street
surfaces with asphalt concrete and cement concrete on certain streets in the
City of Vernon account of pavement cuts by or for utilities and private
contractors, was read.
It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Malburg, that Resolution No.
1941 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1942 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon directing the giving of notice inviting sealed proposals or bids for the

It was moved by Mailliard, seconded by Malburg, that Resolution No.
1942 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Vernon declaring prevailing rate of per diem wages to be used for the

It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that Resolution No. 1943
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Specifications and plans be approved, was read.

of Consulting Engineer Barnett be approved.. Motion carried.
Resolution No. 1944 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon approving Specifications No. 198, including prints of Engineering
Department Drawings Plan No. B5-1278, consisting of two sheets, Plan No. B5-1369
and Plan No. A3-1379, consisting of one sheet each, for the construction of
asphalt concrete pavement and appurtenances in Pumping Plant No. 3 and in the
north side of Fruitland Avenue from three hundred forty feet to six hundred
sixty feet west of the center line of Downey Road in the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No. 1944
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1945 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of

It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that communications from
Daniels, Elson, & Mathews, dated June 14 and June 18, 1956, be received and filed.

Resolution No. 1947 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon denying the application of John B. Leonis, Jr. for an extension of time
of zone variance granted by Resolution No._1907, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Resolution No. 1947
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1948 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon authorizing the execution of a contract with the Termite Company, Inc.,
for structural pest control in the City Hall Building at 4305 Santa Fe Avenue in
the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Malburg, that Resolution No. 1948
be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Resolution No. 1949 - A Resolution of the City Council of the City of
Vernon authorizing the execution of an agreement with the Rotary Club of Vernon

be approved and adopted. Motion carried.

Communication from Air Pollution Control District requesting that the
City give all possible consideration during the current budget deliberations
to establishing the kind of collection and disposal system adequate to meet the
needs of the community, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that communication from
the Air Pollution Control District be received and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Commonwealth Steel and Supply Company, a subsidiary
of Howard Supply Company, requesting a permit to conduct a steel and supply
distributor business at 1916 East 51 Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that request by Commonwealth
Steel and Supply Company be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Rigid Metal Products requesting a permit to conduct
a business of manufacturing and distributing Extruded Aluminum Entrance Doors and
Frames of the type used on commercial and industrial buildings, at 1915 East 51
Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that request by Rigid Metal
Products be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from General Steel Products, Inc. requesting a permit
to conduct a business of manufacturing steel products at 2306 East 48 Street, was
read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that request by General
Steel Products, Inc. be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Harry Turken requesting permission to operate a
transfer or salvage station for materials other than non-combustible, such as
rags, paper, in conjunction with operating a public dump of non-combustible
materials on East 26 Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that the request of
Harry Turken be referred to the Fire Deparbnent, Police Department and
Director of Sanitation for investigation and report. MOtion carried.
Communication from Garrett Freightlines, Inc. requesting a permit to
operate a freight terminal and business of interstate common motor carrier
operating under Interstate Commerce Commission Certificate No. 263, at 3677
Bandini Blvd., was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that request by Garrett
Freightlines, Inc. be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from the Exchange Club of Vernon requesting permission
to post its' own signs within the city limits of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that the request of the
Exchange Club of Vernon be granted subject to approval by the Engineering
Department and Police Department for location of said signs. Motion carried.
Report of Health Department activities for May, 1956, submitted by Robert
S. Stone, Director of Sanitation, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Malburg, that the Report of Health
Department activities be received and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Coatings & Fiberglass Research Co. requesting a
permit to conduct a business of chemical consulting at 5000 District Blvd., was
read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that request by Coatings
& Fiberglass Research Co. be approved and permit granted. MOtion carried.

Notice of hearing before the Public Utilities Commission of the State
of California on Applications filed by Transcontinental Bus System, Inc.,
Continental Pacific Lines and Pacific Greyhound Lines for authority to increase
fares, was read.
It was moved by poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that Notice of hearing ,
before the Public Utilities Commission of the State of California be received
and filed. Motion carried.
Communication from Norris-Thermador Corporation requesting a permit to
haul refuse from their premises at 5215 So. Boyle Avenue over the public streets
to an authorized dump or incinerator outside the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that request by Norris-
Thermador Corporation be approved and permit granted. Motion carried.
Communication from Robert S. Stone, Director of Sanitation, requesting
permission to purchase one IBM Electric Typewriter at a cost of $443.00 for use
of the PBX-Stenographer, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Mailliard, that request by
Director of Sanitation be approved. Motion carried.

Communication from L. C. Husted, Fire Chief, submitting a letter from
Colonel John R. Alison, 452nd. Bombardment Wing, Long Beach Municipal Airport,
in which he requests that S/Sgt. Patrick N. MOorehead be granted a leave of
absence for a two weeks period for a tour of active duty, July 22 to August 5,
1956, was read. Fire Chief recommended that request be granted without loss of
pay.

Communication and report from Harold A. Barnett, Consulting Engineer,
requesting authority to have J. B. Probert remove one avocado tree and one loquat
tree located along the fence on the north side of City Hall grounds at a cost of
$55.00, was read.

Communication from Tweeddale Guard & Patrol Service requesting a permit
to operate a private guard and watchman service in the City of Vernon, was read.

Tweeddale Guard & Patrol Service be referred to the Police Department with power
to act. Motion carried.
Communication from Standard Steel Corporation requesting that tlNo

permit to conduct a wholesale cow meat operation at 3137 E. Vernon Avenue, was read.

to advance K. D. Irwin from HosemanClass 2 to Class 1, effective July 1,1956,
