MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING
OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD JULY 27, 1956 AT 10 O'CLOCK A.M. IN
THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS OF THE CITY HALL
LOCATED AT 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON,
CALIFORNIA
COUNCIL PRESENT: Anderson, Furlong, Mailliard, Malburg, Paxon
COUNCIL ABSENT: None
The adjourned regular meeting was called to order by Mayor
R. J. Furlong.
The City Council proceeded to conduct a public hearing on
the petition of Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation for a variance
from the provisions of Ordinance No. 541, and all amendments thereto,
of the City of Vernon.
Robert L. Martin, Court Reporter, was present and reported
the proceedings.
,The following were duly acknowledged as being on file:
(1) Affidavit of Publication in The Los Angeles Daily
Journal on July 24, 25, 26, 1956 of "Notice of Proposed Change from
Zoning Provisions";
(2) Affidavit of Posting "Notice of Proposed Change
from Zoning Provisions" by Francis D. Schultz, a Field Engineer in
the employ of the City of Vernon;
(3) Affidavit of City Clerk Re Mailing Postal Card
Notices on application for variance of Food Machinery and Chemical
Corporation.
The Mayor asked if anyone from the floor wished to address
the City Council with reference to said petition.
Attorney for the petitioner addressed the City Council and
called as witnesses three employees of Food Machinery and Chemical
Corporation.
Exhibits presented by the Attorney for petitioner were
accepted as a part of the file.
Mr. Robert L. Chambers and Mr. Max I. Ginsberg addressed
the City Council and questioned petitioner with reference to intended
use of the property involved.
Letters were presented from Los Angeles Transit Lines,
Kennedy Name Plate Company, National Cylinder Gas Company, Raymond
J. Schirm and Fibreboard Products Inc. with reference to said
petition for a zone variance.
It was moved by Paxon, seconded by Malburg, that letters
from the aforementioned b~ received and filed. Motion carried.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that Petition
of Food Machinery and Chemical Corporation for a zone variance be
taken under advisement. Motion carried.
John W. Shenk, III, Special Counsel, appeared before the
City Council and discussed the claim of Abraham Chalk and Charles
Ness, doing business as Chalk Metal Company, for alleged property
damage resulting from the flooding of the intersection of 46th
Street and St. Charles St.

Resolution No. 1960 - A Resolution of the City Council of
the City of Vernon approving compromise and settlement in the case
of Abraham Chalk and Charles Ness, doing business as Chalk Metal
Company against the County of Los Angeles, City of Vernon, et al,
Defendants, was read.
It was moved by Paxon, seconded by Mailliard, that
Resolution No. 1960 be approved and adopted. Motion carried.
Ayes: Anderson, Furlong, Mailliard, Malburg, Poxon
Noes: None
Absent: None
There being no further business to come before the
meeting, it was moved by Malburg, seconded by Mailliard, that the
meeting adjourn. Motion carried.
