MINUTES OF AN ADJOURNED REGULAR MEETING
OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
HELD JANUARY 28, 1958, AT TEN O'CLOCK A.M.
IN THE COliNC IL CHAMBERS OF THE CITY HALL
LOCATED AT 4305 SANTA FE AVENUE, VERNON,
CALIFORNIA.
COUNCIL PRESENT: Anderson, Furlong, Mailliard, Malburg, Poxon
COUNCIL ABSENT: None
The adjourned regular meeting was called to order by Mayor
R. J. Furlong.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that Ordinance
No. 710 receive a third and final reading by title. Motion carried.
Ordinance No. 710 - An Ordinance of the City of Vernon to
license, for the purpose of revenue and regulation, certain kinds of
business authorized by law and carried on in such City including
shows, exhibitions, and lawful games carried on therein; to fix the
rates of license tax upon the same and to provide for the collection
of the same by suit or otherwise; and prescribing penalties for the
violation of the provisions of this Ordinance, and repealing all
Ordinances and parts of Ordinances in conflict therewith, was read
for a third and final reading by title.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Poxon, that Ordinance
No. 710 receive and pass a third reading and be adopted. Motion
carried.

Absent: None
Communication from Safeway Stores, Inc. requesting a permit
to haul rubbish from their premises located at 1925 East Vernon
Avenue over the public streets to an authorized dump or incinerator
located outside the City of Vernon, was read.
It was moved by Malburg, seconded by Poxon, that the request
of Safeway Stores, Inc. be approved and permit granted. Motion
carried.
Communication from H. Kaplan requesting a permit to conduct
a wholesale meat business at 5050 S. Alameda Street, was read.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Anderson, that the
request of H. Kaplan be approved and license granted. Motion carried.
Communication from John H. Scruggs, Psychologist, suggesting
that Pumping Plant Operator Jack Weeks be assigned to duties that
will relieve him of shift work in order that he will be occupationally
associated with other people, was read.
The Engineering Department suggested that a possible
solution to the problem might be to transfer Mr. Weeks to the Street
Department as Assistant ~fuintenance Man Grade 4, and to employ an
additional Pumping Plant Operator at either Grade 4 or Grade 3,
depending on the qualifications of available applicants.
It was moved by Anderson, seconded by Mailliard, that the

Engineering Department be authorized to employ an additional Pumping
Plant Operator at either Grade 4 or Grade 3 as soon as a qualified
applicant is available, and that Hr .vleeks be transferred to the
Street Department as Assistant Haintenance Man Grade 4, effective as
soon as said additional Pumping Plant Operator has been employed and
trained to efficiently perform the duties of a Pumping Plant Operator.
Motion carried.
The following excavation applications, all having approval
of the Engineering Department, were presented:
Application 21625 - The Pacific Tel and Tel Co. to replace
one pole in S/s 37th Street.
Application 21626 - United Steel Workers Local No. 1549 to
install three 4lt C.!. roof drains under
sidewalk and through curb in W/s Hampton
Street and S/s 49th Street.
Application 21627 - So. Calif. Gas Co. to install a 111 SMP
gas service to 5765 First Street.
Application 21628 - United SteelWorkers Local No. 1549 to
connect property at 2516 E. 49th Street
with sewer in W/s Hampton Str~et.
It was moved by Poxon, seconded by Malburg, that Excavation
.ipp1ications numbered 21625 to 21628 inclusive be filed and permits
granted. Motion carried.
There being no further business to come before the meeting,
it was moved by Malburg, seconded by Anderson, that the meeting
adjourn. Motion carried.
