3 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON
AUTHORIZING THE SETTLEMENT OF A CLAIM FOR DAMAGE TO TRAFFIC
4 SIGNAL LOCATED ON THE EAST SIDE OF SANTA FE AVENUE AT 25th
STREET.

THE CITY COUNOIL OF THE CITY OF VERNON DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
WHEREAS, on or about the 28th day of November, 1951
John Denyan, Jr. ran a truck owned by the Southern California
Freight Lines into the City of Vernon traffic signal located
on the East side of Santa Fe Avenue, at 25th Street; and
WHEREAS, the City Engineer of the City of Vernon
has determined that the cost of repairing said traffic signal
is the sum of $255.40; and

WHEREAS, the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, insur-
ance carrier for the said Southern Oalifornia Freight Lines
and/or John Denyan, Jr., tendered the sum of $255.40 as settle-
ment in fUll of all damages resulting from the destruction of
said traffic signal;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLV:ED:
Section 1. That the Mayor and the City Clerk are
hereby authorized to execute a release of all claims upon pay-
ment to the City of Vernon of the sum of $255.40 by the Liberty
Mutual Insurance Company for and on behalf of the Southern
California Freight Lines and/or John Denyan, Jr.
Section 2. The City Clerk of the City of Vernon is
hereby directed to certify to the passage of this Resolution
and thereupon and thereafter the same shall be in full force
and effect.

The attached copy of Police Department Report,
dated November al, 1951, advises of automobile accid~nt,in
which the traffic signal on the east side of Sant8_ 1"e Avenue
at 25th street was krwcked over b:;r truck owned by Southern
California Freight Lines, 2850 s. Alameda Street, Los AnGeles,
California. 'The truck was driven by .John Der'1yan, Jr., 1102
N. Hose ~~venue, Compton, California.
']'he costs incurred by the City of Vern()n in !:'epair-
ing the damage caused b~; the accident am01J_nt to ilP255 -40, as
shown on the attached detailed st8. ternent.
It is recormnended that the truck ovmer be billed
for the repairs to the signal.

Wednesday, November 28th, 1951
The following is a report of the investigation made by the Vernon Police
Department on accident involving a truck and a City of Vernon Traffic Signal
on East side of Santa Fe Ave., at 25th street.
Log entry 10: 05 AWl, November 28th, 1951, IvIrs. i~.orton phones and states a
truck has knocked over a light pole, told her would send a Officer.
10:05 A.M., Buzzed Walter, in back yard
10:06 A.M., Walter in and out to signal knocked down, at 25th and Santa Fe,
per log entry 10:05 A.M., this date.
10:16 A.M., Chrisman phones and states the traffic signal is knocked down at
25th and Santa Fe and all signal lights are out.
10:16 A.M., Phoned Edison 00., JE-2211, and reported signal down, per above
log entry.
10 :25 A.M., Wa ter in and states, Chrisman will report on signal at 25th and
Santa Fe, reported knocked down to this department, per log entry 10:05 A.M.,
this date.
11:05 A..M., Chrisman in and reports, while on patrol observed that signals
were not working at intersection of 25th and 26th streets, with Santa Fe, upon
checking, found that the master signal standard on east side of Santa Fe at 25th
St. had been knocked down, I was told by an employee o~ Variety Associated Inc.
2528 Santa Fe, that a truck had knocked signal down while backing into their
driveway, I then talked to. John Demya.n Jr., 1.102 N. Rose Ave., Compton, no phone,
temporarI Chauffeurs license 242415,.who stated he had his truck, a 194-1 Chevro-
let 1 & 2 ton truck, # 210, License # B/E X95085 registered to Southern Ca.lif.
Freight Lines, 2850 S. Alameda street, Ad-3517l, parked on east side of Santa Fe
at 25th street, wa iting for a truck to pullout of driveway at 2528 Santa Fe
so he could back in and When other truck pulled out he started backing in and
was being guided by another truck driver and man did not signal him to stop, so
he thought he was clear and kept backing and hit signal standard breaking it
off, this signal standard is located on south side of above mentioned driveway,
standard was broken off at base and also control box which is mounted on standard
was broken, apparently by fall and controls in box were spilled out onto side-
walk, there were no personal injuries an<;l no damage to truck, advised Demyan of
financial responsibility Law and stood until LaVoy of Edison Co., arrived and to~
charge, damage to signal was estimated at about $1000.00, all signals at the
intersections of 25th and 26th streets with Santa F'e are now out of operation.
3:42 P.M., Sgt. Looney in and states Traffic signals at 25th and 26th streets
on Santa Fe are now in operation. .
