Honorable City Council
City of Vernon
Vernon, Cali~ornia
Gentlemen:
Reference is made to the letter dated October 29, 1952,
from the Public Utilities Commission of the State of California,
addressed to Mayor R. J. Furlong, Mayor of the City of Vernon,
recommending the closing of an unauthorized vehicle crossing over
the Southern Pacific Company tracks at Mile Post 486.8, from the
East Roadway to the West Roadway of Alameda Street, between 50th
and 51st Streets in the City of Vernon and to the reply, dated
December 2, 1952, of Carson B. Hubbard, City Attorney.
Subsequently, the Los Angeles County Grade Crossing
Committee met"at the site va th Mayor J:turlong, the City Attorney
and the City ~ngineer. It was agreed and the Grade Crossing
Committee so reported, that the crossing should be kept open and
made a public crossing. It was further a~reed that the existing
crossing be widened to 50 feet; that the ~outhern Pacific Company
grant an easement to the City of Vernon for the crossing; and that
the expense of improving the crossing be divided between the
Southern Paci~ic Company and the City of Vernon in accordance with
the Public Utilities Commission's regulations for the ItAlteration
of existing grade crossings to accommodate trafficlt.
The Southern Pacific Comnany has made an estimate of the
cost of improving the crossing, 9f~which the City of Yernon's
proportion of the cost would be ~?1,090.00. The, City ~n~ineer has
ch.ecked the estimate and finds the cost to the City of vernon in
accordance with the understanding reached at the aforesaid meeting.
Herewi th is letter, dated hLay 7, 1953, from the Southern Pacific
Company, together with estimate, relative thereto.

Dear Sir:

crTV' OF' VERNON
SUBJECT:
Crossing over Southern Pacific tracks - Alameda
Street near 50th Street, Vernon
Please be referred to meeting held on the ground by sub-
committee of the Los Angeles County Grade Crossing Committee concern-
ing the dedication of 50th Street as a public crossing across our
tracks, which meeting was held because of expression by the Public
Utilities Commission of the State of Ca1iforn1a that this crossing
No. BG-486.8 should be closed and report of the sub-committee dated
January 26, 1953, recommending that the crossing be left open and
made a pUblic one in view of its many years of service.
As per discussion between you and Mr. McClure, there are
attached copy of our estimate and print of our drawing B-2832 show-
ing outlined in pink tint the area proposed to be dedicated to the
City of Vernon and the proposed raising of the drill track.
It has been found impractical to change the grades of the
main tracks in view of the comparative elevation of the east roadway
of Alameda Street with the most westerly main track. We believe that
by raising the drill track as indicated, improving the crossing with
new rail and guard rail on all three tracks, and paving of a 50-foot
wide crossing, considerable improvement will be had.
You will note from the estimate that the City of Vernon's
proportion of the cost would be $1,090 and the Southern Pacific's
share $2,125. This division of expense is based on understanding
reached in the Public Utilities Commission's offices on August 28
1950, under tfa1terations of eJtlsting grade crossings either by widen-
ing, changing the alignment of highway or changing elevation of high-
way to accommodate highway tratficft. Under this division of expense
the railroad bears all of the expense in connection with the preparing
of tracks for paving with the exception of the runoffs on the drill
track which is to be raised and repaved. If you find same satisfac-
tory, please advise and we will have agreement prepared covering this
proposed improvement.
Attchs.
Yours very truly,
~k//)~Z:~#
